Drobo
Here''s another product which has removed the hassle out of disk
management:

I wonder if they (Data Robotics) will make the Drobo work with ZFS
once Leopard is out (since it supports HFS+)?

Rsync stops in the middle of a large transfer
Hello everyone. I am having trouble with rsync stopping in the middle of a
transfer. Everything works fine for smaller batches of file, but when I try
to rsync big groups, it just stops in the middle.
I have been using rsync to copy my home directory to an SD card. I recently
got a Drobo+Droboshare (NAS) and want to do the same thing to the Drobo, but
when I run rsync, it stops somewhere in .local and quits. This is the
command I am using:
rsync -vz -rD --stats --delete --delete-excluded --exclude=".gvfs"
--exclude=".VirtualBox" --exclude=".miro" --ex...

How to change 'fstab' when you cannot boot the machine?
Hello All,
So My Drobo finished formatting and I added an entry to fstab for it and
now I cannot boot the machine. I get an error about
fsck.ext3: is a directory while trying to open /drobo
and then a mention of a valid super block
I had mounted the Drobo as /drobo and in 'fstab' I copied the line for '/...

Formatting a USB Drive
Hi All,
I have a Drobo, connected to a CentOS 6.4 box. The box sees it as /dev/sdg.
I want to format it ext3 (as they dont support ext4) but when I try I get:
# fdisk -u /dev/sdg
WARNING: GPT (GUID Partition Table) detected on '/dev/sdg'! The util fdisk
doesn't support GPT. Use GNU Parted.

Raid-Z expansion
Apologies for the blank message (if it came through).
I have heard here and there that there might be in development a plan
to make it such that a raid-z can grow its "raid-z''ness" to
accommodate a new disk added to it.
Example:
I have 4Disks in a raid-z[12] configuration. I am uncomfortably low on
space, and would like to add a 5th disk. The idea is to pop in disk 5
and have

ZFS Newbie question
...dy up on either buying or building a box that would allow me to add drives of varying sizes/speeds/brands (adding more later etc) and still be able to use the full space of drives (minus parity? [not sure if I got the terminology right]) with redundancy. I have found the ?all in one? solution being Drobo however it has many caveats such as a proprietary setup, limited number of drives (I am looking to eventually expand over 8 drives), and a price tag that is borderline criminal.
>From what I understand using ZFS one could setup something like RAID 6 (RAID-Z2?) but with the ability to use drive...

ZFS storage appliance?
...I''m quite enamored of its design goals. The reliability considerations are particularly attractive, and the snapshot scheme is more robust than anything I''m familiar with. I would very much like to keep my personal data in such a filesystem.
Some time ago, I caught the launch of Drobo, a USB-connected box that does some RAID-like things with drives, but without any of the RAID management headaches. It transparently grows and shrinks as devices come and go, and just presents a big LUN to the host. Essentially it''s a storage appliance, and while it helps if you format it...

rsync with 8bit file names?
When trying to sync my TV folder to a mirror drive, episodes with non-ASCII characters in them cannot be processed by rsync. Anything I can do about this?
For example, I get this:
building file list ...
file has vanished: "/Volumes/TV/Raising Hope/Raising Hope - S04E01 - De?\#201ja Vu Man.mkv"
This is rsync under OS X:
$ rsync --version

8-15 TB storage: any recommendations?
Hello everyone,
This is not directly related to CentOS but still: we are trying to set up
some storage servers to run under Linux - most likely CentOS. The storage
volume would be in the range specified: 8-15 TB. Any recommendations as far
as hardware?
Thanks.
Boris.

When should LVM be used?
In my old computer I have a much bigger hard drive then in this one --
and I plan to hand that old computer down to one of my sons -- keeping
his current drive from an even older computer. Currently the hard
drive on my old computer has SuSE Linux, but that will go. I'll
rebuild CentOS 5.5 on it, but I want to leave some free space for
whatever comes up and also dual-boot Vector Linux. Which,

ZFS for my home RAID? Or Linux Software RAID?
Hello All,
I build a new Storage Server to backup my data, keep archives of client files, etc I recently had a near loss of important items.
So I built a 16 SATA bay enclosure (16 hot swappable + 3 internal) enclosure, 2 x 3Ware 8 port RAID cards, 8gb RAM, dual AMD Opertron.
I have a 1tb boot drive and I put in 8 x 1.5tb Seagate 7200 drives. In the future I want to fill the other 8 SATA bays
