Solaris ACLs, the mask parameter on directories disappears
...rched the archives and I can't seem to find an
mention of it.
The smb.conf is quite simple, its a test machine. I can reply with it
if necessary.
Here's an example:
I've made the directory and shared it:
# getfacl /samba/export/testshare2
# file: /samba/export/testshare2
# owner: dpullman
# group: melsaunx
user::rwx
group::r-x #effective:r-x
mask:r-x
other:r-x
default:user::rwx
default:group::r-x
default:mask:r-x
default:other:r-x
Now I've gone to the share and changed the group and default group perms
from an XP security tab:
# getfacl /samba/export/testshare2

that I've reported since 3.0.23d still exists. If anyone has a
suggestion, or if I missed something in release notes or anything,
please let me know.
Fundamentally, the SAMBA server is not honouring the UNIX file system
permissions.
My groups listing in UNIX:
[root@chrome samba]$ groups dpullman

We use NIS (yes, still, but ldap is coming soon :) for all UNIX workstations and the servers, and we also use a NT domain controller (PDC and BDCs) for the windows workstations. The user names are the same on both account databases. So I'm dpullman on windows and on UNIX logins.
We maintain a consistent uid and username in NIS on each account with a master database at our facility. Lets us use shared resources across otherwise disconnected political boundaries, i.e., the login is the same and so the user is known.
Our windows logins map th...

Access to a server using multiple netbios names and include files
We have a file server, solaris 2.8 running SAMBA 2.2.8, that has two
netbios names and we have an include file for smb.conf for each.
We have some machines that are trusted and some that are not. Trusted
means standardized windows install, users don't have root, untrusted
means not necessarily standard install, users do have root. The trusted
machines are defined in an NIS netgroup.

Any approaches to server usage reporting/metrics
Has anyone seen or implemented SAMBA server usage reporting? The sort
of thing that can be reported to management. Perhaps even any ideas on
how to approach this, even if it would need to be built in-house?
My intention is to show "how much" the server is used, such as number of
users, number of connections, etc. As you can imagine, I'd like to find
a way to show what we get

UNIX vs. AD group permissions
We've just built a RHEL 5 ES server to test the issues we've been having
with group permissions since 3.0.23 (re: 3.0.23d UNIX vs. AD group
permissions) and we found we have the same issue with the Redhat built
rpm of version 3.0.23c.
The following is the ldap and winbind portion of our smb.conf, the same
as used on our current Solaris production servers:
