Seeing two networks with Samba
Hi there, I'm in our dorms at the university, and throughout the dorms we've got a large windows network with shares on everyone's computer and things. (dorm network) Inside our dorm, however, we've got a linux box doing ip masquerading for an internal network. The linux box has 2 ethernet cards, one which ta...

Suggestions/Pointers on where to begin my search for a solution?
Hi- I''m working in the IT department of a small liberal arts university-- we''re getting *massacred* by P2P traffic. Informal testing/probing indicates that about 60% of our traffic from the dorms was P2P-- we''ve taken the initial step of hardlimiting the dorms to no more than 40% of outgoing university bandwidth. Also, we''ve blocked the ''standard'' ports for KaZaa, Gnutella, etc. in our firewall/switch setup (Cisco Catalyst 6500 between us and the net at...

RODBC on Mac OSX pointers?
...(Darwin 6.8) installed and R 1.8.0 installed from source and I have updated RODBC to 1.0-4. On the ODBC manager end, I am using OpenLink software's iODBC Administrator and I've set up a User DSN called "PostGRES" - odbctest suggests that this is functioning: > [doibook:~] dorme% /usr/bin/odbctest > iODBC Demonstration program > This program shows an interactive SQL processor > > Enter ODBC connect string (? shows list): dsn=PostGRES > > Have a nice day. > [doibook:~] dorme% However, when I try to access the connection from R I get the following: &g...

MD5 passwords in Red Hat Linux 6.1
...ve enabled MD5 passwords in installation program. Also I've added two other users during installation. After looking through /etc/shadow it seems that root's password isn't md5 although passwords of other two users are md5. Is it correct behaviour? browsing, subnets, across, workgroups
...ould go in a STUDENTS workgroup. It works great for computers in our academic subnet, no matter whether the windows machines are in the SERVERS workgroup or not, the FACULTY workgroup and the SERVERS workgroup (and some other miscellaneous ones) show up and are lovely. However, computers in the dorm subnet can't see the SERVERS workgroup if they are in any workgroup besides SERVERS (ie. STUDENTS). Once we change the windows machines to be in the SERVERS workgroup, they see the servers just fine. Why is this? Is there anything I can do about it? Could I maybe get another ethernet card...

Correlation based on the attributes of vertices
Dear all, I have a directed graph - an Igraph to be more precise - which has some vertices attributes (like dorm, year etc). Edges and the graph itself do not have any attributes. Based on the attributes of the vertices, I'd like to calculate correlation among the edges (e.g. how likely people of the same dorm are connected?) for the whole graph. Also, I'd like to calculate inter-attributes correlatio...

Samba server side printer driver, how?
...hen they add the samba shared printers? I am looking for help in creating the samba share whereupon the nessesary files could reside. And for generating the nessecary files, and putting them there. Also, I am wondering about the legality of the process: That is, since my users are residents at my dorm, they have their own private software, and the dorm which is running the server, doesnt have any windows licenses. I could borrow the relevant installation cds to generate the nessesary files, i guess, but would it be legal? I have been googling and reading documentation, but I could only find doc...

How to stop winbindd from granitng UID=0? Security hole?
...if net is down). We acquired that too. But now there is a real problem. There is a domain user root. If the domain is present, we can login to the client with putting simple "root" as a username, and using domain password. And we are actually getting uid 0, so we are real root, not just dorm user with funny-looking username. Of course this behaviour is great for normal (unprivileaged) user account, but not for root account. So, domain operators can have root domain acocunt and this way get root acces to all linux boxes with this setup. Does anyone know how can I stop it? I'll pos...

RV: LATENCY PROBLEMS
Hello there, I''m having lots of problems with my setup here. Let me explain: I am network administrator for my university dorm. We are about 300 users, and we have 2 ADSL connections doing load balancing with 300kbits upstream and 2Mbit downstream. The load balancing is working great, we are doing connection tracking so I can mark and hence prioritize interactive traffic and ACKS on the upstream, and with ipp2p I mark p2...

Hi perhaps someone else already had the same problem. Problem description: I''m running a class B University network with approx 10k hosts attached. I would now like to stop traffic from and to hosts in my network not already registered in my DNS server. This means I''ve to handle with approx 50k rules|routes. limit bandwidth per host question
...bit/s must pay DKR 2200/year = EUR 300 = USD 400 in television licence fees :-( This is a lot of money for poor students, so we want to offer the students the *option* of limiting their download speed to 255 kbit/s. Limit must be per internal IP number (or MAC address, even better). Situation: dorm rooms, 130 residents, Internet connection is 100 Mbit full duplex fiber Ethernet, never over 10% used. Router/firewall is a Debian/Etch box 650 Mhz, 160 Mb RAM, with kernel 2.6, iptables, netfilter iproute2 & everything necessary. eth0 = internet, eth1 = DMZ, eth2 = internal NATted network,...

Problems with ICQ etc. on nano-setup
I administer a nano-setup on a dorm-network with a couple of hundred active users. The setup uses 2 x 2 2Mb/s DSLs, meaning two DSLs from each of two different ISPs. It works fine except for some minor glitches: https-sites often kicks users. This was solved by tying outbound https to a single DSL. Not the best solution but it...

FLAC 1.0.5 beta1 released
I have an Athlon Thunderbird 1Ghz sitting running all alone in my dorm room while I'm at home for six weeks. I figure I'll run these tests just to give the poor machine something to do. Seeing as 3DNow! extensions seem to enabled by default, I'll give them a whir. I'm running Debian unstable's latest GCC 3.2 prerelease as its compiler. export C...

Is there effective way using R to select variables subset!
Hi, I wonder is there any way to select a subset useful variables from a large data set of variables to build a linear function with a single y. I know some methods without validation in the selection procedure. I want to know is there any way to do effectively with validation? thanks! Zhizhong [[alternative HTML version deleted]]
