Problems with Win-Username containing a "Umlaut"
...10 WinXP Pro computers and a SuSE 7.3 Linux Server. I configured Samba to map the Windows Usernames of 9 computers correctly, but the one, with which Marc D?rner is working, is not mapped correctly. I found out, that this is caused by the "?" (german Umlaut). If the Username is "Marc Doerner" it'll work, but i'd like to keep it to "Marc D?rner". So: How can I set Umlaut-letters in the username map? The entry in the username map for Marc is: marc = "Marc D?rner" Can you help me?? Silvio

There are also a few people having trouble with browsing and it might be of help there as well. Thanks again. Backup problems resolved!
Guys, I've been searching for a Windows based backup solution for the SAMBA shares on my Linux server (a Cobalt Qube) since last November, trying both Seagate Backup Exec and ARCserve but with no success. I've been monitoring this list and tried most of the suggestions, but nothing came close. I'm pleased to say that I've found a solution that works for me ... Dantz have

poor rsync performance with specific Linux kernel version?
Hi all I am new to this list but a happy rsync user for quite some time. Thanks for this great tool. We are experiencing very slow rsync performance when using it as a backup tool for our server virtualisation "Proxmox VE" (http://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Main_Page). I have searched for our issue and posted at the Proxmox forums (

special chars in windows filenames
Hi folks! I upgraded a red hat linux fileserver (kernel version 2.4.18-14) from samba 2.x to samba 3.02. After the upgrade, the special chars in windows filenames (German Umlaute) were no more visible to clients but either substituted with a little black rectangle or completely suppressed - depending on the client operating system (W2000/W98). Within the archived list I found a hint that the
