audio data encoding in FLAC: how complex ?
...mb(=Rice?) encoding:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golomb_coding#Simple_algorithm
What is unclear to me is how many audio samples
encoded with a fixed parameter (denoted 'M' in the wiki,
which i presume is equivalent to the 'Rice parameter'
invohed here):
http://flac.sourceforge.net/documentation_format_overview.html
But things are a bit more complicated because the wiki says:
"audio codecs [...] use a Rice code after the linear prediction step".
But it does not tell us about how many points/samples get
interpolated, and what criteria are used.
So i guess that in the end, for every frame,

I am not an expert on the guts of FLAC, but
there is some information about this at:
http://flac.sourceforge.net/documentation_format_overview.html
and scroll down to "MODELING".

FLAC algorithms
Hi,
Is there some documentation available about the algorithms FLAC uses?
I'm talking about some high-level descriptions of the algorithms, which I
can read without having to understand the source code.
thanks in advance

educational doc about FLAC
Hello FLAC-dev,
Do you know if there is some good educational documentation showing FLAC's
internal design in a few steps, like this doc for monkeysaudio :
http://www.monkeysaudio.com/theory.html
If not, what is the principle of the algorithm in a few big steps (example
: 1. Conversion to mid/side instead of L/R channels 2. Predictor 3.
Entropy coding) ?
Best regards.

How is the MD5 hash calculated?
is it on a per subframe basis, and if so, is each frame padded if it’s not a multiple of 512 bits? or do I have to decode all the data, and run it over the decoded file at once?

flac -- exhaustive model search vs. -A <*>?
...that conform to the standard"...
If that's the case then the highest -l value one can 'portably' use would
be 12? FWIW, I've tried 16 & 12 and noticed no difference in exhaustive's
execution time.
Another "nit" I noticed, from
http://flac.sourceforge.net/documentation_format_overview.html
in the inter-channel-decorrelation section -- it mentions -m vs.
-M, where -m always uses mid+side channel whether it is bigger or not,
while -M adaptively uses mid+side or stereo depending on which is better.
Why would flac levels 7 and 8 use -m (always when -M allows adaptive

This is explained at:
http://flac.sourceforge.net/format.html
in the bulleted point beginning, "FLAC
specifies a subset of itself as the Subset
format."

Perhaps I have misunderstood your problem,
but is this not what magic numbers are for?
For Ogg Vorbis and Ogg FLAC, see:
http://wiki.xiph.org/index.php/MIMETypesCodecs#Codecs_Parameter
For Native FLAC, see:
