Rebooting during installation
OK, I know I've seen the answer somewhere, but I can't find it. How does one handle the situation when an installer asks you to reboot during an install? Wineboot does nothing, or maybe it does, but I can't figure out what to do next. Are there generic instructions for doing this?

Audio problems in karmic-9.10
I am running wine 1.1.29 in kubuntu karmic-9.10 64-bit, and I am having a problem with audio in wine -- namely, there is none. The problem seems to be that in jaunty, there are several files installed in /usr/lib32/alsa-lib that are needed to support audio in wine, as part of the ia32-libs package. In karmic, those files are not present in the package -- there are only a couple of bluetooth

Singularity game has slow video
I am posting this here because the other posters in AppDB say the game works fine. For me, the video is slow and jerky, not playable at all.
System: Dell XPS630 q9550 dual core-2, 8gm RAM, 2x NVIDIA 9800GT, lots of disk space (meets all system requirements)
kUbuntu-10.04, all current updates, nvidia 195.36.24 driver. Have tried kde, gnome, and lxde desktops (compositing disabled), same problem in

Trouble with directx games on wine-1.2 64 bit
Ever since the RCs and the release of 1.2, I have been having trouble with directx based games not working properly. They did work under wine-1.1.3x. The problems are: video very slow and jerky, about 1 fps, objects appearing as "tears" on the screen, missing some textures, and screen going blank during certain effects.
System: 64-bit kubuntu-10.04, dual NVIDIA 9800GT w/ 512 mb, plenty

Help with USB-to-serial cable
I am trying to use software to program a scanner radio (BCD396t and UASD software). The software installs and seems to run properly, reading and writing database files. But I cannot connect to the scanner, through a USB-to-serial cable.
OS: ubuntu-8.10, kubuntu-8.10, debian/lenny (tried them all)
lsusb identifies the cable as follows:
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 067b:2303 Prolific Technology, Inc.

Conflicts between kde and wine games - workaround
I'm posting this message because I discovered that there appear to be serious video conflicts between some games running in wine, and the kde desktop. Specifically, I have been unable to get "The Witcher Enhanced Edition" to run without severely distorted video. I have both gnome and kde desktops on my system (kUbuntu jaunty-9.04). Today I tried running the game in gnome, and was

Wine in kubuntu-9.04
I cannot get wine to run in kubuntu-9.04, on an x-64 machine. This is with the standard video drivers, nothing extra added. I have tried both the wine version in the repository, and the beta version from budgetdirect(?). Winecfg does run in the repository version, not in the beta version. It does run in the 32-bit version of kubuntu-9.04, on a 32 bit machine.
Basically, it won't run anything at

wine explorer crashes on start - wine-1.3.25 + natty
I am using wine-1.3.25 on kubuntu natty 11.04 (64 bit).
I am trying to start wine explorer, but it crashes every time, even with a "clean" .wine directory.

Can't install Doom3
I am trying to install the Doom3 game, and the install is failing. I believe it failed when it tried to switch CDs; it never asked for the second cd, just went straight to the closing dialogs. Now, it's so messed up I can't even uninstall it. When running the uninstall option from the wine menu, it quits and does nothing. When I phymanually removed the files and tried installing again, it

Game that worked in .24 doesn't in .25 and .26
I have a game (The Witcher Enhanced) that worked in 1.1.24, but does not in .25 or .26. It dies on startup with a black screen, and CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE (killing the X server) appears to be the only escape. In addition, attempting to run in with .26 makes changes in the .wine directory I use for the game, such that the only way to get it to run in .24 again is to reload the .wine directory from

Strange colors in wine-1.1.38 playing The Witcher
An issue has appeared in wine-1.1.38 while playing The Witcher. Many of the plants that should appear green are now bright orange. Reverting to 1.1.37 or earlier fixes the problem.
This is kubuntu-9.10 64-bit system with NVIDIA 190.53 and 195.36.03 (tried both, same problem) drivers. Compositing disabled. The game is otherwise playable.
Is there some configuration setting that has changed with

Help installing software with multiple cd's
I have been trying to install several games, and all of the ones that have more than one disk fail, one way or another, at the point of changing cd's. Some (doom3) just quit [there exists an alternative plan for doom3], and others (Baldur's Gate-SoA) lock up the cd and won't let go. The only way to get the cd out is to kill the installer. I found the instructions on WineHQ, which say

Cannot run wine explorer
System: kubuntu oneiric 64-bit, ia32-libs installed.
Cannot run explorer with a new wine prefix.
I am trying to move from one very bloated .wine directory, to several smaller .wine-app-specific directories. But when I create a new .wine?? it crashes when trying to run explorer. It does actually run with the old .wine. An error box comes up saying explorer crashed, then I have to kill it with
