scp and SGI DMF
Hello, For some time now, our users have been encountering a problem when using scp to overwrite files on our mass-storage system, which uses SGI's DMF product. I don't have any data as to whether or not any other HSMs would be similarly affected. The scenario is that a user is overwriting a file (via scp) that has previously been migrated to tape. The scp opens the file for writing, but does not truncate the file. This causes DMF (the HSM) t...

Samba serving files with *very* long access times
I access files on our Cray T3E from my Windows 2000 PC via a Samba share. One of the volumes on the T3E is managed by Cray's Data Migration facility (DMF). The majority of the DMF files are stored off-line and restored to disk as necessary. This operation typically takes 3-5 minutes. Normally when a Windows 2000 application tries to read data from one of the off-line files--even if it's just the first few bytes--the applications hangs and then...

...r-specific features) in the IETF standard MIB subtree, so it is the last fallback choice in automatic guesswork. >Does 2.7 have the newer fancy MIB and I can just compile up and >install manually? I cherish this part of your question ;) as I spent a large part of last year co-developing the DMF (dynamic mapping format for me, though there are other de-abbreviations) technology which allows just that - give the capable version of snmp-ups the suitable mapping file, reload the driver and try out support for new hardware with unchanged binaries. This mapping file is an XML with mappings desc...

rsync - using a --files-from list to cut out scanning. How to handle deletions? (fwd)
...files that have been replaced rather than added or deleted. Thanks for your astute observation about updating hard-linked files: you had me worried for a while. Fortunately, we are using the --whole-file option in our production backups, since the target of our backups is an HSM system (SGI's DMF), and we don't want rsync to start comparing files (and thus triggering a recall). With this option, if a file is changed between the source and a target which contains a hard-linked version of the file, then the rsync update replaces the file in the target, not overwrites it and all its hard-...

Many open green PRs in NUT, wanna merge?
...8> , or consider something with more traditional quoting semantics (systemd seems to do this for device nodes). Note that I haven't tested this, so there may be some other way to view driver status in systemd that does not involve viewing Base64-encoded names. > And finally there is the DMF branch, without a PR yet - but with hundreds of commits. It did not require maintenance (beside syncing from master) for several months now, while it works in our project on a daily basis, so I'd say it is also good to merge. It is waiting for Arno's precious and rare resource of time to re...

The destinations of our backups are file systems subject to HSM (Hierarchical Storage Management), using SGI's Data Migration Facility (DMF). Recycling directories and backup performance. Was: Re: rsync --link-dest won't link even if existing file is out of date (fwd)

Our backup target filesystems include SSD and are managed by SGI's DMF. Hope this helps. Rob. Dr Robert C. However, since my list needs to be 184 long there must be an easy way to make it. >list(1:2,3:4,5:6,7:8) [[1]] [1] 1 2 [[2]] [1] 3 4 [[3]] [1] 5 6 [[4]] [1] 7 8 I have tried lis<-1:184 dim(lis)=c(92,2,1) as.list(lis) and several other options. Any suggestions? many thanks Marco [[alternative
