fxp damages dmesg?
Motherboard ASUS CUSL2-C with 815EP chipset and two Intel 82559 Pro/100 Ethernet cards exibits the following. dmesg reports usual text only a few seconds after reboot. Later it displays a single line with a fragment of ipfw log, e.g. 167 213.131.11.152 in via fxp0 which seems to change with each new activity of ipfw. Files /var/log/dmesg.today and /var/log/dmesg.yesterday rotate daily as usual and contain simi...

Monitoring FS operations
Greetings All, Without going into the specific reasons why I need to do so, is anyone aware of a method (or tool) of watching real-time, human-readable (or system call print) of ext3 filesystem operations on a mounted, active filesystem? Excuse me if this is a duplicate question but I was unable to find any similar ones in the archives. Thanks in advance! Kevin Strong Criminal Information

Getting IOAPIC errors in xl dmesg on old hardware
I am getting a series of IOAPIC errors in xl dmesg on a Dell OptiPlex GX100 machine (bought in 2000). I also get an error from traps.c which is very similar to the one in the ''Getting mm.c errors from xl dmesg on certain hardware'' thread. This happens during system startup with no DomUs running. I have attached the xl dmesg log....

Rather than overwriting the previous one, move it to a backup, create the new one, and log something if they differ. I hacked this up in a couple of minutes: --- /etc/rc.d/dmesg Sat May 6 21:00:26 2006 +++ dmesg Tue Nov 7 20:17:47 2006 @...

dmesg -- multiple boot messages
Today I install FreeBSD release 4.8 on a machine for the first time. This is on a new machine so it could easily have as yet undetected hardware faults. I observe the 'dmesg' gives startup information not only for the latest boot but also information generated in a number of previous boots. I've not seen this with earlier FreeBSD realeases including 4.7. Is it normal for FreeBSD 4.8 or should I be looking for hardware problems? I notice some change in that...

[PATCH] p2v: Send physical server 'dmesg' output to debug dir on conversion server.
If the virt-p2v ISO doesn't contain the correct drivers for the hardware on the physical server, that can cause peculiar conversion problems. This was hard to diagnose because we could not see the 'dmesg' output from the physical server. Upload 'dmesg' output from the physical server (more precisely: from the virt-p2v ISO's kernel running on the physical server) to the virt-v2v conversion server debugging directory, so that this information is available for debugging later. Unfort...

[PATCH] Fixes bug which strips every other digit in klibc-utils dmesg output
There is a bug in the way which klibc/usr/utils/dmesg.c tries to strip the initial <[0-7]> from kernel messages. The bug causes every other numerical digit to be stripped from the output. Fixed. A bug report with lots of details has been filed for Debian and Ubuntu: * http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=483186 * https://bugs.la...

dmesg and messages differences
Hi everyone. I just wondered what's the difference between /var/log/dmesg, and /var/log/messages? Why do we have 2 log files that are similar? Dmesg log for 2.6.31-rc8 kernel been built on F12 (rawhide) vs log for same kernel been built on F11 and installed on F12
Previous 2.6.31-rc8 kernel was built on F11 and installed with modules on F12. Current kernel has been built on F12 (2.6.31-0.204.rc9.fc12.x86_64) and installed on F12 before loading under Xen 3.4.1. Dmesg log looks similar to Michael Yuong''s ''rc7.git4''  kernel for F12. Lockd: failed to reclaim lock for pid ...
...od reject?! lockd: failed to reclaim lock for pid 8225 (errno -37, status 4) and at some point, we start getting errors that the file locks are stuck.. you can write and read from the lockfile, but programs that depend on the C construct lock file throw filelock errors until we reboot. Why is dmesg, /var/log/dmesg, and /var/log/messages unique from each other? I thought dmesg was a representation of /var/log/messages/ Is there a way to get a date stamp for the dmesg? if a job failed in the last hour and the message is from yesterday...and I don't know that doesn't help. "xm dmesg" ring buffer size option?
I have a large system with pretty voluminous boot time messages that are exceeding the capacity of the ring buffer displayed by "xm dmesg" (i.e., the early messages are lost, and I see only the last messages). With a regular, non-Xen kernel, I use "log_buf_len=size" to enlarge the printk ring buffer size, but this boot option doesn''t seem to work for Xen. Anyone have a handy tip for this problem? Thanks in a...
