Latest Samba Disto for Os390/Unix ?
HI,I would be interested if there is a release of Samba for Os390/Unix later that 1.9. (I have tried downloading the 'samba-latest.tar.gz' file from the mirror site, but as I cannot unzip/untar it,due to not having the 'gzip' program !). Therfore I am not sure how compatible it may or may not be with my Os390/Uss platform. Thanks for any help received in advance. John.

Thread moderation and list etiquette (Reference - Another Fedora Decision)
...I think it is generally a good thing when the bulk of the conversation here is ranting about mostly irrelevant opinions. That is, instead of 'Why doesn't this work"', or 'How do I fix this problem" that you would have if there were something fundamentally wrong with the disto. -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell at gmail.com

Idea to cut down on Distro list
I'm sorry if this is not the correct place for suggestions, but I didn't see any other place. I'm sure everyone has realized how massive the distro list is when submitting test data. My proposed solution is to add two drop down menus, one will contain disto names e.g., "Ubuntu" and "Fedora", the second box will contain release/version e.g., "10.04" "11.2", thus cutting down on the distro list. As it stands every distro has an entry for all the different version. So when I select PCLinuxOS only the correlating v...

Pentium Samba server?
I have got an old pentium back. It is an Intel 66Mhz processor, 16MB RAM and a 2 gigabyte harddrive. Could it be used as a dedicated samba server and what Linux disto would work well? I was thinking of Debian 3 or Slackware. Can samba act as a 2000 PDC?

including R in the SuSE Linux distribution
Dear R people, This message is not a message for help, so strictly off-topic, but I wanted to reach as many users of R as possible. Please excuse the fact that it is off-topic. I use Linux, and the distribution I use is the German based commercial distribution SuSE. SuSE prides itself on trying to be a comprehensive distribution of free software. However, they do not include R (or for that

question about network repositories
Hi I'm thinking about setting up a local / LAN respository for my CentOS, and probably other (Fedora Core) disto's, but have never done it before, so here's some questions: If I setup a repository, can it hold different distro's / architectures & versions? Say for example, CentOS 4 (i386 & x64), CentOS 5.0 & 5.1 (i386 & x64) - will each one have it's own folder? Will it als...

CentOS versus Scientific
...developers over there are rather coy about which Enterprise Linux distro they base theirs on. I wonder if anyone here has done a comparison of the two that they'd care to share. I work in a Scientific Research Lab (Stem Cell Research) and am wondering if there is anything about the Scientific disto that might be better suited to our needs, even if it is only the fact that it is put together by people who work in similar environments and would therefore understand our needs better. I'm just starting to read up on it to see what I think and thought I would ask what others think. One thing...

Newbe: OK so far?
Mr. Cully: Thanks for replying. Any idea where I can find such for a SuSE 6.3 system? I've looked at Yast's installable features and there is no such thing... Ubuntu and ZFS
...inux (http://zfsonlinux.org/). ZFS-fuse is in the official Ubuntu repos but is rather outdated and almost all development has stopped. ZFS on Linux (aka ZoL) is an open source but license incompatible kernel module that is under active development and released as source packages for most major distos. There is a ppa for Ubuntu here: https://launchpad.net/~zfs-native/+archive/stable ZoL is actively used in various NAS distros, as well as things like proxmox. I am currently using it as a backup target combined with rsync and snapshots. ZFS-fuse and ZoL packages can't be installed togeth...

I can tweak these first 6 with setserial and they work My goal it avoid having to recompile the kernel from the stock disto. Thanks! ~Sean

java packages - tomcat5?
Have the jpackage-packaged things like tomcat5 been moved into the disto repositories? Do they work with sun java? In particular, tomcat5 used to require jta. The one yum installs doesn't mention it now, but it also doesn't work with sun java 1.5 installed the jpackage way. What am I missing? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell at gmail.com

CentOS samba upgrade
Centos samba version is 3.0.10 which is the package that comes with the disto - is the only way to upgrade to the latest samba 3.0.24 is to recompile the samba source? I have tried "yum update samba" however it says 3.0.10 is the latest so i downloaded 3.0.24 and tried rpm -Uvh or yum localinstall but i get the following dependency errors to # yum install samba-...

Compiling and Configuring Samba for Mandrival
...p://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/compiling.html) 6. Now you need to configure the makefile. This is simple, the only pain in the butt is making sure you have the right configure parameters for Mandriva to keep the various pieces of samba from being scattered all over your disto. (i.e. smb.conf in /usr/lib ???) simply run: ./configure --prefix=/usr --infodir=/usr/share --mandir=/usr/share --with-co nfigdir=/etc/samba and the pieces will get placed in the right places. 7. run: make 8. run: make install (this completes the install) 9. no...

Using custom QEMU binaries with libvirt
Hi all, I compiled a custom version of QEMU 2.0.0 and I am having hard times to make it available to libvirt. Just to clarify, if I execute /usr/local/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 it does performs good. But when I put this very same path to <emulator> tag in a domain configutation, when i start the domain I get error: Failed to start domain vm1 error: internal error: process exited while

Anti-virus for use in para-virtualized Xen
I''ve been looking at anti-virus software for Xen use on Linux systems, on both Dom0 and DomU, in industrial environments. Reviewing documentation on various packages seems to show that all the commercial ones insist on sticking kernel modules into a limited set of standard known kernels. This of course creates some serious risks until the anti-virus packages are developed in and

Guidance: compile education
This question may not belong in the Centos.org list, but I do want to compile against this distro. Please advise. The question: Can I be pointed at methods to learn to compile source against a distro. I have software development background (but too long ago to be specifically useful; however I have the concepts). Typically I can find some fairly decent step-by-steps for some apps, but it

Guidance: compile education
...l. For a quick test, that might be enough, but you have to note where things land and clean up after yourself. Note that 'most' things worth building have already been packaged as RPMs, so finding them is still going to be your easiest solution. If they are for a 'slightly' wrong disto, you can often grab the source rpm instead of the binary and 'rpmbuild --rebuild ...' to get locally configured binary rpms. The somewhat higher level approach to this is to install the 'mock' package from epel and then 'mock -r some_version --rebuild some_src.rpm'. T...
