a more specific question about qda
Perhaps, I should complement my previous e-mail question: I am trying to select variables through a quadratic discriminant analysis. It seems to me that a robust criterion is the value of the discriminatory power (i.e. the ratio of the separation of the class means to within-class variance) How can I obtain this ratio from V & R's qda() output ? Thanks (I hope this question is relevant) -- Daniel AMORESE Lab. M2C "Morphodynamique Continentale et C?ti?re" UMR CNRS 6143 Caen/Rouen Cen...

Mutually assured minefields.
...nal standards. The reason the MPEG formats are so thoroughly encumbered by patents is that the process used to build the formats is designed to be "blind" to patent considerations: all the participants have agreed that any patents they hold will be licensed under "Reasonable And Non-Discriminatory" terms, a term of art which few normal people would actually describe as all that reasonable or all that non-discriminatory, as RAND often means "quite expensive". With only that assurance in hand, they go about constructing their formats through an extensively political tournament...

Automated Binning for building predictive models
Hello, Currently I am using R for building a logistic model using numerical and nominal data as predictors. Before doing the regression, the predictors are grouped. The groups I determine manually by trying to maximize the information value (which is an indicator for the discriminatory power of the variable) under the condition that enough data are within each group (approx. 5%). Is there a method in R available which allows for an automated grouping/binning for that purpose? I know that e.g. SPSS has such a feature. I think such a feature is helpful in the modeling process....

Paypal? Available in 44 of the world's approximately 190 countries
...ave a Paypal account and travel anywhere in the "2/3rds world". This appears to be a new policy, as a friend signed up last year using his South African card, and verified his address using a local utility bill. So the impression is that we have EBAY to thank for these draconian and discriminatory practices. So please, Steve and Olle and others, don't consider Paypal as a suitable means of settlement for international events. I know its a rant - I'm sorry. I feel better now. Regards, Steve Davies

...nd commentary as told through the eyes of a young African American Male who experienced, and perpetuated many of the truths that many in "Black America," and the world in general would have you believe do not exist. It is a riveting expose that sheds light on the oppressive, and often discriminatory nature of "Mainstream American Society." A society that has nurtured the rampant disregards for self-respect, and enlightenment that many young African American men, and women currently suffer from. The writer supports his arguments with direct references to the overwhelming numbers...
