Controlling the length of line with abline(lm())
...alues. This seems not very right to me (not to mention
it looks unaesthetic). I do not mean to imply that the straight-line
behavior of my system is maintained throughout. I would like to limit the
length of this line to the range of my data. However, I have not been able
to figure out how to. Very disconcertingly, I found out that all the books
that teach statistics using R seem to be drawing such infinite length-lines.
I would appreciate any advice or suggestions. Regards,

GCC bug affects playback?
Hey Oggers,
I have a RedHat 7.1 machine at home, and a 6.2 system at work.
After seeing Monty's announcement of the GCC optimize bug, I compiled
my ogg-tools package at home with RedHat's 2.96 gcc (the errata
version, not the original buggy version). I have no problems playing
encoded ogg files on my home machine--they sound great.
At work, I have the binary RPMs from vorbis.com,

?Accuracy of prop.test
I have just joined this list (and just started using R), so please
excuse any etiquette breaches as I do not yet have a feel for how the
list operates.
I am in the process of teaching myself statistics using R as my utility
as my ultimate goals cannot be satisfied by Excel or any of the plug-ins
I could afford.
I am currently looking at chap12 page 552 of Weiss's Introductory

Xen boot has poor screen resolution and fails to load X11
I tried sending this e-mail to the list earlier but no one replied...
Right, so I''m brand new to xen, and I''ve had success in making xen boot
(kernel /boot/xen-2.0.6.gz module /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.11-xen0), but
there are a couple major issues.
1) The screen resolution. I''m running a ThinkPad T30 (2366-92U, for
those who want to know), and all the text looks fuzzy. I

Diablo 2 - Two mouse cursors
Hello, I'm running Diablo 2 under Wine. It runs beautifully, except I get two mouse cursors: the game cursor, and the X cursor. This can get kind of disconcerting sometimes, because they're not always colocated. Any hints? I have DxGrab = Y.

3.0rc4 + ldap backend (Advice? Suggestions?)
Howdy Folks,
I'm working on implimenting centralized authentication for a mixed
environment:
- Samba(3.0rc4) -> Win2k/XP
OpenLDAP User Store -> - nss_ldap -> linux/unix
- FreeRadius -> Cisco/HP Networking Equip
(My apologies if that doesn't look right for anyone)
I have a functional ldap database (openldap-2.0.27-8), and I'd very much
like to use Samba 3.x (been

mailx (PR#404)
Is there a reason that the default option for a mailer program (at least
on Linux) is .Options$mailer="mailx"? I don't have mailx on my system,
I suspect many other Linux users don't either, and it's kind of disconcerting
to have bug.report() fail ...

quotas again
A couple of notes about quotas-- I know this has been brought up
before but the negative effects that occur when a user is over quota
are still disconcerting.
Ideally it would be best if a user could at least delete mail when in
an over-quota condition. One would think it would be enough to simply
ignore errors creating the index files (and use an in-memory index).
However, another problem is

TDM410P & dahdi driver == no lights?
Hello,
I have just installed an Asterisk server with a Digium TDM410P card with 3
FXO modules (no module in the 4th slot).
It's lived on two different machines (a test machine, which had Linux kernel
2.6.28, and a new dedicated machine which has Linux kernel 2.6.32).
On the test machine (2.6.28), I used the Zaptel drivers. Once the kernel
modules were loaded, the lights on the TDM410P came

Mounting a volume - isolating directories = Stumped.
As so far I have 15 servers feeding data to my four node Gluster-FS
(cluster), at this current time all of my scripts are faceted to mount
the volume and move data into its directory, only issue I see with
this is that half of these clients should not be able to go one level
back from its 'home' directory when transfering data - I wanted to see
if there was a way to isolate these specified

Printing vs. iptables
Recently, Windows 2000 SP4 clients have developed a problem when using a
network printer connected to a Samba print share.
Some applications are OK. But take, well, notepad, for example. Selecting
a local printer is normal, but there is a two minute delay (!) in selecting
a network printer. Once selected, all is well. All smb operations are
frozen until the selection happens. This is

bug in lastlog logging?
Folks;
I couldn't find anything on my archive of the mailing list on this,
and it may just be my mis-understanding, but:
When I "ssh machine1 -l user1" as user2 on machine2, if user2 has the
same uid on machine1, then user2's name ends up in lastlog, instead of
user1's.
This is a bit disconcerting when user2 is root, and root isn't allowed
to remotely log in on

rc31 -> "deferring operation: binding"
I hate to bring up anything that might delay 1.0, but the behavior I'm
seeing is rather... weird.
I'm running rc31, using "userdb static" and "auth_bind=yes".
With rc1 (what I had been running) I would occasionally get some
"deferring operation" complaints from LDAP, but very rarely. Every
now and then it would start to throw "deferring operation:

glm.nb versus glm estimation of theta.
Hello,
I have a question regarding estimation of the dispersion parameter (theta)
for generalized linear models with the negative binomial error structure. As
I understand, there are two main methods to fit glm's using the nb error
structure in R: glm.nb() or glm() with the negative.binomial(theta) family.
Both functions are implemented through the MASS library. Fitting the model
using these

HP Drive Key Boot Utility works (2.10?), but syslinux 3.71 doesn't
Hi folks. I'm not very well versed in linux (although I understand the
basics, having used unix quite a bit - albeit a long time ago). I've
decided to make the break from windows, and I'm trying to learn
something along the way.
So, I have a Dell Vostro 200, Core 2 Duo, shipped with no OS. I decided
to try the Live USB approach to get started. The first step, of course,
is to
