Samba + LDAP over the WAN
...e Master LDAP server could have been contacted? 2). I know that each workstation in the domain changes its machine password at a random time, what would have happened during this process if the WAN was down? 3). Are there any other problems that could be caused by a WAN outage that can be called disasterous? What would those be? 4). Any recommendations to minimize No. 3 above? -- Kevin L. [LLVMdev] Flamewars!
...ous in their response. As others have said, it is really important to be polite and try to be understanding, particularly on widely read mailing lists. Sometimes it is hard to understand what someone means or what perspective they are coming from. I don't think the occasional flamewar is disasterous to the community, but we want to encourage a helpful and friendly atmosphere. Finally, we want to encourage people to speak up if they have a question or a problem. llvmdev currently has 637 subscribers, and probably a large number more that read through gmane and other aggregation services....

using xyplot to plot frequencies
...ng: xyplot(freqframe$Freq~freqframe$standard|freqframe$Year) the plot is wrong, probably because the dataframe has unnecessary repeats of values. I also tried converting all2 into a ftable (also tried a matrix) and naming the columns and rows and evoking them in the xyplot. But this has also turned disasterous. Connecting two rsync clients
...s on the machine, and all the html gubbins). The destination machine, a remote (i.e. off network, backup) machine which I have shell access to which is purely used for backups. I want to set rsync to run from cron daily to backup any changed files to the remote machine so that should anything disasterous happen, e.g. client stupidity, I can recover files. I'd assumed after reading the docs that I would be able to do a client->client backup. I don't have access to setup rsyncd on the remote machine so I tried connecting two clients. Am I correct in trying this? All the work is don...

XEN 2.0.1/Xenolinux 2.6.9 domain0 not booting on Debian Sarge / P4 Xeon
Hi all I am in the process of upgrading my XEN servers from 2.4 to 2.6 kernels as I am having better results on 2.6. However one machine (the big daddy) refuses to boot a 2.6.9 xenolinux kernel. It''s an IBM eSeries xServer x205. I have selected what i think are the appropriate options in menuconfig but it refuses to boot into dom0. By refuse I mean it initialises the hypervisor,

[LLVMdev] llvm.meta (was Rotated loop identification)
...m.annotation Does anyone use these? Supposedly the optimizer "ignores" them. But the optimizer certainly doesn't ignore additional uses of a value. - llvm.expect This is injected in the def-use chain. Accidentally running the optimizer with these intrinsics present would be disasterous. It's really the same problem as representing an invariant, just different semantics. - load range metadata We should be able to express general value ranges, independent of loads. We should be able to express the invariant conditionally, independent of the value's definition. T...

has anyone tried running nginx on their local machine?
if so, have you encountered any problems? i''m trying to copy the whole configuration i have on my server to my local machine, to do some disasterous tests and such; problem is...i can''t really seem to get it on. some problem. if i configure nginx for a couple of apps (i.e, copy the whole part that starts from server { listen 80; server_name localmyapp; ... ... } ) how am i supposed to reach it? http://localmyapp/ doesn''t...

Vorbis license terms? (fwd)
...id for writing software with prostitution. He's not a halfway kind of guy. The Open Source movement needs RMS, but that doesn't mean he should be trusted with the kingdom, the same way I wouldn't trust any extremist, fundamentalist or intellectual who consistently chooses elegant (but disasterously incorrect) logic over the very minimum of common sense. > I'm afraid I don't worship on the altar on non-forking. Probably > because I don't feel competition == wasted effort. In my own experience, the single largest cause of forking is way too much ego flying around. Fo...

Design decision: Dynamically adding data question.
I need to give users the ability to optionally add metadata to documents. Another way to state this is the fact that users need to add at least 5 categories to a document. Basically what I want to do is dynamically add metadata (or categories) to a document on an ad hoc basis. Here are the options that I have thought of: **Option 1:** Should I do this by dynamically creating new table columns in

some portability fixes ...
i don't want to deal with CVS, so i'll just post some minor fixes along to explanations for your amusement on this list ... I. cygwin compilability cygwin doesn't yet handle threads that is compatible with icecast, but thankfully icecast supports win32 native threads. however, cygwin's preprocessor "#define"'s makes icecast confuse whether it should behave

EXT3 Worries
Dear Sir or Ma'am: I am interested to think about implementing EXT3 onto my servers here. However, I have some concerns and am hoping someone can address them. 1) If I install ext3 what is the likelihood that the extent of damage caused by its bugs will be limited to just the fact that the journals may not work properly? Alternatively, do I risk real damage to files and the filesystem at

R-beta: S Compatibility (again)
While I think total compatibility is not possible or even very important I have become aware recently of some fairly low level incompatibilities that have rather serious consequences for interchange between systems. Some of these are possibly well known, but I put them on on record here just in case. (I do not expect any action on these, of course, but people may want to note them, and correct
