[announce] Dirvish 1.1 final
I am pleased to announce the availability of Dirvish version 1.1 final. Dirvish is a fast, disk based, rotating network backup system. With dirvish you can maintain a set of complete images of your filesystems with unattended creation and expiration. A dirvish backup vault is like a time machine for your data. New features and improvements:...

Dirvish, --link-dest and permissions
(I'm not sending this to dirvish@pegasus because I think that this message applies more to rsync's --link-dest option than to just dirvish.) I recently noticed a huge spike in dirvish network usage and traced it to files whose permissions had been changed. (with rsync v2.5.6) I understand and agree that a --link-dest copy...

good snapshot solution
...y backup on tape of this machine, but I'd like to replace the daily backups by a disc-based setup. It would be good to be able to share the snapshot-folders with Samba, so our helpdesk can easily do restores. They are not trained in Linux. After doing some research I found three candidates: - Dirvish - Rlbackup - Rsync_snapshots by Mike Rubel The first two seem to be pretty elaborate, but are based on Rsync 2.5.6 and I'm wondering if that's going to give problems with the Rsync 2.5.5 on Netware. Can one safely mix versions? I use only these options: -rtv --delete --modify-windows=2 Al...

Sad news about JW Schultz
I was saddened to learn today that JW Schultz was found dead back on March 27th of this year. JW was a big help in the recent development of rsync and I sorely missed his presence during the last release cycle. JW was also the author of the Dirvish backup software, and Keith Lofstrom (who provided me with the sad news) has plans to put some memorial information onto the new dirvish site as details become available ( http://www.dirvish.org/ ). JW: thanks for all your help! Your cyber legacy lives on. I'm sure that those who knew you wel...

--link-dest copying modified files
Hi! It's me again with another --link-dest issue: I am using dirvish (www.dirvish.org) to create daily backup on disk images. dirvish is using rsync with --link-dest pointing to the last good image. This creates images with hardlinks to unmodified files. So far so good. Now I want to create a "current" filetree with hardlinks pointing to the last image....

How to prevent batch rsync to write rsync_argvs files in the home directory

How to backup maildir

What if Dovecot, > amavis, mysql, or whatelse is in the middle of writing out a mail file > what happens to that file and restart. I use dirvish, which is based on rsync, and which only syncs changed files but uses hardlinks to keep storage and bandwidth down - it leaves me with a full copy of the tree for each date, with links between. I run it on a machine at home. I don't ususally worry about stopping services; maildir should be all...

[Bug 3175] New: devices and --link-dest don't seem to work together
...CC: foner-rsync-bugzilla@media.mit.edu [I'm using the version from the 20051014 nightly snapshot, on Ubuntu Breezy 5.10, which is a Debian-based system, and using an ext3fs filesystem.] It doesn't appear as if rsync correctly hard-links devices together. This came up in the context of dirvish runs which happen to include some filesystem trees of older versions of entire OS disks, so they've got /dev directories in them, etc. dirvish is supposed to crosslink snapshots with each other (courtesy of --link-dest), but it wasn't doing so for these files. And I can't get rsync to...

[Bug 10290] New: Regression since 3.0.9: send_xattr_request: Assertion `f_out >= 0' failed
...x64 OS/Version: Linux Status: NEW Severity: regression Priority: P5 Component: core AssignedTo: wayned at samba.org ReportedBy: moritz at bunkus.org QAContact: rsync-qa at samba.org Hey, I'm running daily backups with dirvish (which uses rsync with --link-dest, very similar to rsnapshot). This creates one directory per day for the machine I'm backing up. It works fine with both rsync 3.0.9 and 3.1.0. Once a week I also sync the whole machine directory containing those daily directories to an extern hard drive conne...

--server options
Hi all, I see a couple of earlier threads, particularly this one: https://www.mail-archive.com/rsync at lists.samba.org/msg32328.html partly answer my question, but not fully. I also am writing a wrapper, so that I can run multiple dirvish runs against the same server, using forced commands, but without using multiple keys to get multiple commands, which is my current workaround. But in the interests of locking things down, I'd like to know what the options are in the -eSTRING section, so I can choose which to allow/force. Is th...

[Bug 2067] New: lsetstat extension to sftp-server
...mindrot.org/attachment.cgi?id=2212&action=edit Patch for sftp-server to add lsetstat extension At the moment sftp is not able to set timestamps on symlinks. In order to make this possible lsetstat needs to be implemented. Attached patch makes this addition. Some background info. I want to run dirvish over sshfs in order to make daily remote snapshot-backups. Currently rsync (which is used by dirvish) reports an error when updating the timestamp of a symlink. This in turn makes dirvish abort the backup. In cooperation with Miklos Szeredi, the author of sshfs, I have created attached patch. He h...

Mutliple backups into a signle dir
Hello. I am trying to make use of rsync for backup purposes. I want to use it with the -b switch: it renames older FILE to FILE~ instead of replacing it with the newer version. This way, only the newest and the second most recent versions of a file are saved. I want to have more versions. One approach to this can be inpired by --backup-dir operation. I'd rather extend the backup

PRNG is not seeded
This is likely a linux or ssh problem, but perhaps someone else on this list may have encountered it. I have run about 15,000 instances of rsync in the last year, (about 500 total hours of rsyncing) using ssh as a transport mechanism ( actually, I am running the dirvish backup wrapper, www.dirvish.org, around rsync). In all cases, I am pulling filesystems from a linux client to a linux backup server. Rsync has worked flawlessly every time. Except ... Sometimes in my logs I see, at random, the warning "PRNG is not seeded", which some folks encounter...

rsync: file too large (27) errors.
I am getting a file too large error. I have googled this and read bug reports on file. I have upgraded rsync on the system that appeared to be having problems. I am still not able to find a solution. I am using Dirvish for backups and was directed to ask here as this was determined to be more of an rsync issue. Backup1 = system that initiates Dirvish and pulls the data from other hosts. This is a Debian Sarge system with rsync: rsync version 2.6.4 protocol version 29 Copyright (C) 1996-2005 by Andrew Tri...
