Domain Users Get Login Prompt with Guest grayed out
We are running Samba v1.2 with Unix v3.2 kernal 5.0.6
I am a complete newbie at Unix/Samba.
Samba is not a domain controller
PC users (Windows XP Pro SP2) logged into the domain are getting prompted
for a guest password. When the username prompt pops up, the username is
defaulted to guest and is grayed out.
If a person logs into the local machine on a pc instead of logging into

Sysvol not accessible?
I am having a strange issue at one location which is running samba 4.1.
Two or three PC's out of maybe twenty-five are unable to get to the
sysvol share. If I run "gpupdate" on the systems it gives error 1058.
Digging deeper says the path was not found, but if I click on the path
in the event log it pops right up in notepad (gpt.ini). This tells me
that the user accounts can access

Sysvol not accessible?
I may have just solved this. I realized I could access \\dc01\sysvol and
\\dc02\sysvol but I randomly could not access \\domain\sysvol for some
unknown reason. I did "host -t A domain" and got THREE addresses back,
but I only have TWO DCs. With that said, I imagine the systems are
randomly being referred to the third, non-existent DC and failing. I
will be researching this shortly and if

Hidden directories in the latest samba release
I have a question.
I have installed the latest samba release
from the source. My problem is that i can't
seem to be able to set the hidden flag on
the directories from windows. It does work
fine with the files.
This is what my share looks like.

libnss-ldap vs winbind?
I set up winbind on one box successfully. Now a friend told me
that it might be better to use ActiveDirectoriy (the PDC and all
other servers are win2000). What is the difference in both
approaches? which is 'better'?
I feel that ldap is the more general and cleaner solution. Is
that true? My windows-admins will get rid of wins soon. does
winbind rely on wins? can libnss-ldap also create

Samba 2.0.6pre1 released
I've just released a snapshot of 2.0.6 in the alpha directory on
samba.org. This is intended for testing to make sure some of the
recent changes work well on a wider range of sites. I have also built
a RedHat Linux 6.X RPM and put it in the same dircetory.
If you are not running a mission critical site then we would
appreciate feedback on this snapshot.

instantrails and oneclick
Today I return to Ruby after 12 months. I find I have several
installations, including Ruby 1.9!? Decided to rationlise things a bit
before starting to learn Ruby again from scratch. Rails is hot stuff and
I find I also had an old version of InstantRails (this is an XP
machine... calm down now, it''s all I''ve got (well not quite, but I''ll
come to that later)).
