Does Samba/Winbind not follow nested groups in AD?!?
...r can not access
the share. Doing a "getent group | grep user | grep 2nd_level_group"
also returns nothing. Samba seems to not be recognizing that a user is
a member of a group under another group.
Is there any way to enable Samba, or Winbind, to follow down the group
hierarchy?

what OS do you use for Samba?
...with CentOS (Redhat). I just want to be sure I
have a well supported Samba server and I need at least the 3.0.20
version so I can use the "inherit owner" property. I also want
automatic updates for bugfixes and security (not to concerned about new
features though). Any insight?

Group Policy install MSI from Samba share
...n and I need to create a
group policy to assign an msi install to a computer. This has always
worked fine on a Windows share, but now the install fails after moving
to a Samba file server. I'm guessing it's some sort of permissions
issue. Does anyone know how to make this work?

Very slow changing permissions from Windows client

Any idea why this could be so slow? Setting permissions on the same directories on the old Windows file server would take maybe a minute.

both return the value of the connected username, but will they return
different values?

vfs_shadow and [homes]
hi,
i was able to successfully run vfs_shadow on a samba share with win xp
shadow copy client. but i think it?s currently not implemented that one
could export [homes] with this vfs object, because AFAIK each @GMT-snap
has to resist directly under the samba share. but [homes] is a virtual
share representing different shares (depending on users).
has anybody hints about using vfs_shadow with

cleaning up duplicate files on the file server
...What it would need is some sort of copy-on-edit
mechanism, so when the file is changed, instead of changing the original
file, the symlink is replaced with the edited version of the file.
Does this make sense? Has anyone else thought about this, or found an
elegant solution to this?

VMWare problems on CentOS 3.3 x86-64
Hi folks,
I'm hoping someone can help with a problem I'm having getting VMWare to work
on CentOS 3.3 (x86-64).
I recently downloaded VMWare workstation 4.5 (not sure of exact version number
but its the latest version as of yesterday). I was hoping to run CentOS as my
main OS and then use VMWare to still support Windows XP machines and run the
couple of applications which refuse to

Two domain groups with the same gid?
...:
user@SERVER01:~$ getent group | grep 10208
DOMAIN\group1:x:10208:
BUILTIN\administrators:x:10208:DOMAIN\user1,DOMAIN\user2,DOMAIN\user3,DO
MAIN\user4
What is up with that? Is there some way I can manually change the gid
of one of these? The group1 is a new group that I just set up btw.

for the purpose of installing a qlogic driver into my system, I need the
exact kernel source version mentioned above. The kernel version is a

"inherit acls" only works with "inherit permissions"
We are running a fileserver (Samba version 3.0.10-1.4E.9) on CentOS 4.4.
No AD, clients are Windows XP and OS X.
Linux acl's are used for access to directories and files. Each top-level
folder belongs to a primary group with mode 2770. The acl's restrict access
to lower level directories. We need to pass the acl's down the directory
tree or else users may have unexpected access to

AD integration checklist
Hi,
I compiled Samba 3.0.23d on a CentOS 4.4 machine. Then I configured
/etc/krb5.conf for my domain. Was able to successfully run kinit and
join my Windows 2003 domain with a net ads join. Net ads user and net
ads group returns the users and the groups of the domain.
So far so good.
I'm kinda stuck on the next step. I would like to grant access to the
share defined in smb.conf to anybody

smbd keeps maxing out the cpu, must reboot server constantly
...the max out started. The computer
will run for a while, sometimes less than an hour, sometimes all day,
just fine, and then in less than a second the cpu goes from around 10%
to 100% and stays there until I reboot. But the default logs tell me
nothing and the level 10 logs are Greek to me.
James Dinkel
PS. Earlier this morning I switched to level 10 logs and when the "max
out" happened I checked the time in the VMWare performance graphs. It
looks like it happened around 9:26:40 to 9:27:20. Here are the VERY
LONG grep results for around that time in the logs:

CentOS 4 Beta x86_64
Hello,
Is anybody working on a build of the CentOS 4 Beta for x86_64? If not,
are there any directions on how to build a full distribution from the
available SRPMS that were used to build the i386 version? I didn't see
any docs on the website.
