Drive id confusion
Solaris and/or ZFS are badly confused about drive IDs. The "c5t0d0"
names are very far removed from the real world, and possibly they''ve
gotten screwed up somehow. Is devfsadm supposed to fix those, or does
it only delete excess?
Reason I believe it''s confused:
zpool status shows mirror-0 on c9t3d0, c9t2d0, and c9t5d0. But format
shows the one remaining Seagate 400GB drive at c5t0d0 (my initial pool
was two of those; I replaced one with a Samsung 1TB earli...

st devices not showing up in xvm
...SXCE dvd (snv_99). When I boot without xvm, I can run "mt config" and see the
configuration information for the first drive in the library. Under xvm, some scsi
operations still work - I can access the changer, move tapes, etc. Howerver, I am
unable to see the tape drives.
When I run devfsadm -v -i st, I get
devfsadm: driver failed to attach: st
exit status = 1
modinfo | grep '' st '' show
210 fffffffff86b6000 206e8 129 1 st (SCSI tape Driver)
so the module is loaded.
Are there any known issues with using tape drives under xvm (from the dom0)?

Actually, I've tracked this down to the USB device nodes changing
ownership from nobody:nobody to root:root during blazer_ups driver

sometimes the device links get gone as well, and this recovers them:

SPARC SATA, please.
Is there a card for OpenSolaris 2009.06 SPARC that will do SATA correctly yet? Need it for a super cheapie, low expectations, SunBlade 100 filer, so I think it has to be notched for 5v PCI slot, iirc. I''m OK with slow -- main goals here are power saving (sleep all 4 disks) and 1TB+ space. Oh, and I hate to be an old head, but I don''t want a peecee. They still scare me :)

why is zpool import still hanging in opensolaris 2009.06 ??? no fix yet ???
...uld now in milestone none verify that the pool was intact: and so it was... fortunately I had not broken the pool itself... all online with no errors to report.
I then went to milestone-all which again made the system hang with the disk activity every second forever. I think the task doing this was devfsadm. I then "assumed on a gut feeling" that somehow the system was scanning or checking the pool. I left the system overnight in a desperate attempt because I calculated the 500GB checking to take about 8 hrs if the system would *really* scan everything. (I copied a 1 TB drive last week which...

My question is: why wasn''t xen.gz built as part of the nightly build? What do I need to do to build and run my own copy of Xen?

Expanding a ZFS pool disk in Solaris 10 on VMWare (or other expandable storage technology)
...rticular application needs more. I hoped ZFS autoexpand
would do the trick transparently, but it turned out some manual
labor is needed. Even though this was a single-disk pool with a
dedicated disk, the EFI label and ultimate Solaris partition and
slices did not detect the size change over several devfsadm''s,
cfgadm''s, exports, imports, reboots, formats and fdisks - only
when I entered some values by hand did things work out.
Many solutions just added a bigger disk, mirrored the pool and
removed the smaller disk, and were left with a bigger pool.
Sometimes for whatever architectura...

Failing WD desktop drive in mirror, how to identify?
I have a desktop system with 2 ZFS mirrors. One drive in one mirror is
starting to produce read errors and slowing things down dramatically. I
detached it and the system is running fine. I can''t tell which drive it is
though! The error message and format command let me know which pair the bad
drive is in, but I don''t know how to get any more info than that like the
serial number

ZFS data loss
Hi,
I have lost a ZFS volume and I am hoping to get some help to recover the
information ( a couple of months worth of work :( ).
I have been using ZFS for more than 6 months on this project. Yesterday
I ran a "zvol status" command, the system froze and rebooted. When it
came back the discs where not available.
See bellow the output of " zpool status", "format"

device name changing
...ted it. All
went fine and the system was humming along.
The fiber-switch rebooted three weeks ago and some of the devices
(LUN''s) went into state failing as seen by veritas so I had to online
the devices and fsck the volumes that went offline. The tape-drive
also took a hit and so I did a devfsadm to have the devices
(re)created. But then a device changed name from c3t1d0s2 to c3t0d0s2
and now veritas report the disk as missing and one volume as
unavailable.

I/O freeze after a disk failure
...sts and we get tons of the following messages on /var/adm/messages:
Sep 3 15:20:10 fb2 scsi: [ID 107833 kern.warning] WARNING: /scsi_vhci/disk at g20000004cfd81b9f (sd52):
Sep 3 15:20:10 fb2 SCSI transport failed: reason ''timeout'': giving up
"cfgadm -al" or "devfsadm -C" didn''t solve the problem.
After a reboot ZFS recognized the drive as failed and all worked well.
Do we need to restart Solaris after a drive failure??

drive replaced from spare
I have a x4540 with a single pool made from a bunch of raidz1''s with
2 spares (solaris 10 u7). Been running great for over a year, but
I''ve had my first event.
A day ago the system activated one of the spares c4t7d0, but given the
status below, I''m not sure what to do next.

zpool import fails to find pool
Hi all,
I moved from Sol 10 Update4 to update 6.
Before doing this I exported both of my zpools, and replace the discs containing the ufs root on with two new discs (these discs did not have any zpool /zfs info and are raid mirrored in hardware)
Once I had installed update6 I did a zpool import, but it only shows (and was able to) import one of the two pools.
Looking at dmesg it appears as
