devastated: reinstalled OS and wine is behaving differently.
I reformatted my system, reinstalled 10.10, got all the updates, installed wine 1.3 from the deb, and now /media/Office12/setup.exe wont run with out crashing. I've done exactly what the instructions say to do. The disk and the cd rom were tested on other computers with out error. It's also the same cd rom that I used to install this same copy of Office before. This particular

Long-long ago it was one of the ?tricky? questions at the UNIX admin test (exam). Basically, no matter how devastating that may sound, the command only will remove what is (alphabetically it was that time) before /dev/[root_device]. Once the device root filesystem lives on is removed from /dev, no further damage is done. So, you will be able to mount drive on another machine and get your /etc, /home, /var, /us...

CRAN downtimes
Hi, we had a broken heating system (in the floor above us) resulting in a water burst .... my office looks like if a bomb has exploded ... Currently our server is up and running again (it was down over the weekend) ... but we will move out of the devastated rooms and hence the CARN master might be down one or more times during the rest of the week. We'll try to keep the down times as short as possible. Skype purchased by Ebay 2.6 Billion
Good news for service providers in my opinion, Ebay will likely start alienating Skype users like they did with Paypal users. Severe pop3 incompatibility report
...compatible with eudora pop3 client - eudora (5.1, 6), pop3, 'leave on server' enabled: the clients receive the full inbox *every time* they check the inbox on the server. [Users using other MUAs experienced the same once, at switching from uw-pop3d/imapd to dovecot.] That is absolutely devastating, especially for home users behind a modem line. We spent a full week with trying to find a workaround with eudora: no avail. The only solution remained was to revert back to uw-pop3d. :-( Best wishes, Jozsef Kadlecsik -- E-mail : kadlec at sunserv.kfki.hu, kadlec at blackhole.kfki.hu PGP key:...

ext3 file corruption
I recently patched our 2.2.20 production kernel with the ext3 patch from kernel.org and have experienced failure on more than one account. Everything seems to run great until the power goes out and the box isn't shutdown correctly. After that files are missing and the box won't boot. All of the partitions were mounted ext3 ordered mode I think. Anyone else experience filesystem

rsync is too often CPU-bound
...fficult to use in a fast trustworthy local network. Firstly, you have to switch off compression, encryption, and checksum calculation. This is easily possible, although it can be hard for people to collect all options necessary for fast-network tuning. However, the CPU performance I observed was devastating. Transfering big files, the NFS server uses <10% CPU, while rsync daemon uses >80%. Why is this? Really critical is this with an NAS with a slow CPU. In my case, it limits the transfer rate from 55 MByte/s (NFS) to 12 MByte/s (rsync). For me, it means that I use NFS for data transmis...

Testing Samba and NFS/AMD inter-action
...ched, 100baseTX LAN, on a small sub-net (240). The LAN is almost faster than the local hard-drive controller. BACKGROUND Last month I lost a major piece of my domain when a 3GB drive failed, due to over-heating. There were insufficient back-ups (mea culpa, kyrie eleison). The customer database was devastated, all the new Samba multi-workgroup sources were gone, half of the web-pages were lost, and the Internet gateway was down for four days. This happened at the worst time (Murphy <grrrrr>), during a hardware upgrade of the master NOC workstation and while a new server was being added. Worse,...

But by then I already moved the SCSI components to the Siemens box and loaded Service Pack 3 on my workstation. Now neither 2.2.6 nor 2.2.7 does the trick.
