compiling samba 3.4.8 on CentOS_6.2
Hello All.
Been trying without avail to make idmap work with my AD so I can get "real"
UID/GID for SSH logins on a CentOS_6 box. Have heard from several sources
that idmap has seen some serious changes since 3.5 and decided to roll back
from the "stock" 3.5 that comes with CentOS_6 to 3.4.8. I'd like to see if
it has the same problems.

Shares within Shares
Is it possible to have a share within a share, or to force group on
directories within a share?
What I am trying to do is set up departmental shares, but find that having
them all in the root list of shares looks messy (too many shares :P )
What would be preferable, would be to have a [departments] share, then put
a share for each department within that share.
Just using directories within that share is not good enough, and I need to...

Group instead of User login scripts
...-bounces. Oops.
Once we get this Samba AD thing installed, we'd like to have users login
and mount particular shares to drive letters based on their group, not
their user. All I've read about this seems to use "user" scripts (along
with the user variables).
By doing this, all departmental users will have the same drive mappings
and we won't need to create individual user login scripts. Is this a
common practice?

Samba PDC + OpenLDAP replica
...had two separate OpenLDAP master servers (2.2.13-4) for two different
Samba PDC servers (3.0.14a-2) with TLS support in different virtual
networks (VLANs), and all worked fine.
However, I decided that it would be nice (from an administrative point
of view) to have all user/client data on same departmental master
OpenLDAP server, which would work as a backend for division level Samba
PDC servers in different VLANs via LDAP replicas (our department
contains many subdepartments, or divisions, and most of them have their
own VLANs). So, I read Samba documentation and I understood that it is
possibl...

How do I apply active directory group policies to samba shares
Hi,
We would like to aggregate departmental servers on to a single samba
share called "departments" and under departments would be a set of
folders corresponding to the departments. Permissions need to be
controlled by group memberships in active directory. When I go into
folder properties on an XP with the departments share...

[LLVMdev] Wiki
TSG (our support group) is going to set up a Wiki on zion so that
access can be checked against a list of some sort. It should happen
by early next week, perhaps sooner (not likely).
They actually have a central departmental Wiki and created an LLVM
space there already, but that cannot be made accessible to non-UIUC
people without creating an account for each person. They have a
policy of not setting up individual Wikis but had to make an
exception for us.

Linux as a workstation client
I'm exploring the idea of using Linux as a workstation OS for some of the
users where I work. Most of the issues I've looked at seem resolvable, but
I keep running into one sticking point. We rely heavily on shared folders
on our Samba server, using ACLs to restrict things on a departmental basis.
What I'd need is a way to mount these folders with the permissions of the
current logged-in user and honoring all the ACLs on the server. Basically I
need it to act just like an NT workstation, client-wise. Winbind can do the
authentication, but I've tried smbfs, and it looks like...

I've gone full circle now, let's start over
When I started considering Samba, the main objective was to have a way
for our users to log into something and map the shares they required
based on their group (departmental) needs. As I asked more questions,
most recommended AD as this would allow the administrator to manage
these users.
Now that I find I'll probably need VMs to handle the AD/DC and the
shares because I only have two servers to work with, I have to ask:
Is there another way I can accomplish t...

Problem with rights in samba 4.9.0
good afternoon everyone,
I have a problem that I can not solve I have installed a samba 4.9.0 in centos 7.5 using XFS.
In the DPTO share I have the departmental folders, which I gave the rights to the groups.
The problem:
when a user creates a file within some sub-folders the group's rights do not arrive in the file is read-only.
When the user accesses a website and downloads the file directly to the share, nobody in the group can access that...

Problems with large trusted domains?
...It acts like it is searching the database, but
after three or four minutes I just CRTL + C it. Do you think this is
winbind not working correctly, or is it because it is polling a trusted
domain with anywhere between 1000 and 3000 user accounts? My Samba box is a
domain member of an NT 4 domain (departmental domain) which has a two way
trust relationship with a second NT domain for the company.

NT user name resolution to UNIX user name doesn't work the same
My departmental file server is on RHL6.2(i386) (Samba 2.0.6) and participates in the company's NT domain. If an NT user wants to see shares on this UNIX(Linux) box I have only to create a UNIX account for them where the UNIX username matches the NT username. I have a Solaris 8 box (Samba 2.2.2), I cannot figur...

Building SAMBA3/LDAP in VMware
...to learn Openldap and eventually migrate an existing Active
Directory domain.
Looking for a good How To or Guide for Openldap, Samba 3, and Debian
Woody.
The State of Alaska is evaluating File & Print Server standards as they
are moving our IT into an Entrprise wide system (consolidating all
departmental IT). Currently Novel & MS and being discussed. I'd like
to get Samba/LDAP involved if I can present a good showing. Currently
our Enterprise email system is being authenticated from Sun One. It
would be great if I could configure Samba to use the Sun directory
server for demonstration....

Is there a way to get inserted into an LEC's CLIDB?
...called Station Level Billing and allows you to transmit your prefered originating number as part of the PRI NI-2 signalling for outbound calls. The CLID name is then presented based on the directory name for that particular number, rather than the default pilot number and name. Handy for sites with departmental DID numbers who want to maintain their individual identities however it's not cheap.
Telus's service also causes your corporate long distance phone bill to come seperated out and grouped based on the originating number - hence Station Level Billing.

restrictions on folder length?
Greetings all,
After migrating a few dozen people to our departmental mailserver,
we've run into a problem with one user who makes extensive use of
folders and nesting them. I've seen as many as 8 levels. The longest
resulting folder name is 113 characters, which results in a total path
length of 137 characters (/var/spool/mail/******).

Running R on dual/quad Opteron machines
Dear all,
I am managing a departmental purchase of an Opteron based
workstation/server for scientific computing on which we will be

The environment will probably be either Unix/Linux or Solaris and the
amount of RAM will be 8-16Gb, depending on the number of processors.
My main concerns are the following:
1. How much does R...
