Anyone have any clues about how to sanitize a dead SSD? We haven't had it yet, but we're sure it's coming. Esp. since I'm a federal contractor, a dead disk gets deGaussed, but what the hell do you do with a SSD?

Thought I would post this experience to the list so it's archived for posterity... My company is deploying Asterisk-based PBX's to all of our branch offices. Each office has 2 analog Voice lines and a fax line. We didn't want to go to the expense of using TDM400's in the servers (which run asterisk and Hylafax) so we opted for 2 X100P cards in each box. For disks that work, shred or DBAN is what we use. For dead disks, we do the paperwork, and get them deGaussed. SSD's are a brand new issue. Is there a utility to zero unused blocks on a disk? CentOS 6.7/Ext4 I saw zerofree, but I?m not sure it would work on Ext4 or even work on this version of CentOS. thanks, -wes

DBAN is obsolete. NIST 800-88 for some time now says to use secure erase or enhanced security erase or crypto erase if supported. Other options do not erase data in remapped sectors. Chris Murphy

Hi, I was discussing the common practice of disk eradication used by many firms for security. I was thinking this may be a useful feature of ZFS to have an option to eradicate data as its removed, meaning after the last reference/snapshot is done and a block is freed, then write the eradication patterns back to the removed blocks. By any chance, has this been discussed or considered before?
