dictionary attack defense
Does dovecot have any dictionary attack defenses yet? In the past I have had to implement defense from outside dovecot, but since dovecot is at the front lines and therefore is the first to know I'm hoping by now there is something we can set. For example, a limit on access failures per minut/hour/day or some such. If not why not?

Memdisk + Freedos problem
I and some other people have problems with running the freedos image included in Ultimate Boot CD (UBCD), when using memdisk for floppy emulation. Memdisk starts booting the image and freedos shows the following menu: 0 Boot Clean 1 Boot UMBPCI (silent) 2 Boot UMBPCI (optimal) 3 Boot UMBPCI (semi-defensive) 4 Boot EMM386 (optimal) 5 Boot EMM386 (semi-defensive) 6 Boot no UMB (defensive) 7 Boot

defense-in-depth possible for sshd?
If an attacker finds an exploit to take control of httpd, they're still blocked in part by the fact that httpd runs as the unprivileged apache user and hence can't write any root-owned files on the system, unless the attacker also knows of a second attack that lets apache escalate its privilege. Basically correct? What about sshd -- assuming that the attacker can connect to sshd at

Merging rows in a dataframe
Hi R Help list I'm looking to visualise US foreign aid 1946-2009 and I have the dataset for this. The trouble is it's a bit too complex and I need to simply it I want to merge all of the rows with the same country together and add up the individual totals to make one total figure per country per year Below is an example of the kind of data. The real dataset has 2447 rows and covers 63

Samba, the GPL and SCO
For those of you following the IBM vs SCO legal case, you have probably noticed that SCO has said that the GPL is invalid. IBM appears to make the reasonable case that you can't say something is void, and then rely on it. INAL, but why is SCO allowed to distribute Samba without agreeing to the GPL? That's like buying a car, then claiming the sale agreement is bogus but you still want

Easiest defense against SQL injection in object creation?
I''ve been scouring the web for suggested Rails defenses against SQL injection, but I haven''t found much on the object creation part. Certainly using attr_protected, etc., is a good way to prevent unwanted fields from being modified on the new object (if you''re passing a hash as creation parameters), but what about escaping the POSTed info before saving? Couldn''t
