Having trouble getting "join" to work successfully
...n
again, we get the same msg.
I've been through the whole /docs/DIAGNOSIS.txt and the only test that
fails is #8 (net view \\BIGSERVER) and I'm presuming that's because the
join hasn't worked correctly. Can anyone help me out? I would certainly
appreciate it. Thanks.

Configuring PAM
...rkgroup...we need to
bypass any authentication at the AIX level. From the limited documentation
(PAM-authenication-and-Samba.html) , it almost looks like PAM will
accomplish this task. Is anyone using PAM for this reason, and if so, is
there more detailed documentation on PAM? Thank you.

How/when do the PAM files get created?
I've been reading chapter 3 of the SAMBA Project Documentation and I can't
find any PAM files (pam.d directory) in my /etc. Is there something I need
to compile in order to have these files? Thanks for any help.

Is it possible to map shares via Network Neighborhood?
...to connect E: to \\nfssrv\ads instead?
I respond 'yes' and it just keeps giving me the same message. What are we
doing wrong? I was told as long as our shares are available in Network
Neighborhood, we should be able to map them through Network Neighborhood.
Thanks for any help.

Can we still use Samba if routers have netbeui/netbios turned off?
...d
pass through the routers. I was under the impression that Samba already
embeds netbios within IP (I thought that's how we can connect with a Win95
client with it's netbios disabled). Is this not the case, is there any
setting in smb.conf that will do this? Thanks for any advice.

One domain w/ multiple subnets. Do a "join" for each subnet?
...run it from.
So my question is...do we need to run the join (smbpasswd) from a machine
that's on each different subnet that we want to hit the shares from??? I
didn't know if this is how it's done since all the subnets are on the same
domain. Thanks for any suggestions.

"hiding" and "vetoing" files (for Samba 2.2.2 & Windows Explorer)
We're running Samba 2.2.2 on an RS/6000 (AIX 4.3.3) using Windows 95
clients. We've tried the "hide files" and "veto files" option in smb.conf,
but when the shares are mapped, we can still see the contents in Windows
Explorer. We used the wildcard for all the contents of the shares (ex.
hide files = /*.*/). The Samba manual only makes reference to Windows 98,

What is the function of nmbd?
...t #5, it returns absolutely nothing (using client name OR the
IP address). Our nmbd daemon is running, too. Again, we're able to map
and work without any problems, so what is nmbd's purpose...and should I be
concerned with these 2 tests not giving the expected results? Thanks.

nmbd dies as soon as it's started
As soon as I start up the daemons using the following commands, nmbd dies.
/usr/local/samba/bin/smbd -D
/usr/local/samba/bin/nmbd -D
When I view the nmbd.log it gives the following. We're trying to set up
Samba to work over 2 subnets. Smbd is ok and we can still mount our
shares. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks for any help.

Hiding shares and/or their contents from Windows Explorer
Is anyone of aware of any known problems with Samba 2.2.2 and Windows 95,
dealing with hiding shares and/or their content from Windows Explorer? We
need to map these shares so our application can function properly...but the
shares and/or their content should never be accessible via Windows
Explorer. We have browseable = no for the shares. We also tried the
"hide"option, but the

installing samba
Hi,
I just downloaded the latest version of Samba in the form of samba-latest.tar.gz
Managed to unzip it with gunzip but cannot figure out how to install it. Tried rpm but didn't work.
I have an earlier version of Samba (2.0.6) on my SuSE 6.4 machine already.
Can I just install the new version or do I need to do some sort of uninstall of the previous version first.
advTHANKSance,
Mariann
