Re: Tripwire mess
Actually I just looked at my RH 5.2 dist and it looks as if Tripwire 1.3 is
shipped with it.

security hole in sudo allows users full access
While sudo is used to give fairly trusted users the ability to run
programs with root privs, there exists a hole in the one in the RedHat
contrib directory (sudo 1.5.9.p4) which allows a minimally trusted user to
obtain full root access and privilege.
If a user is given the opportunity to run any program, that user can
fool sudo and obtain any level of privilege for any executable.

Long tar -x: Box Shuts Down
My Centos 5.2 box shuts itself down during a
long tar -x. There is plenty of disk available.
This is new; it worked in the past.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Mike.

Open a (redbox) modal popup from inside a controller?
Hi,
I''m trying to open a modal popup window using redbox to display a
styled notification/alert to the user. The helpers in the redbox
documentation only describe how to open a redbox when the user clicks
on a link, e.g., link_to_redbox() or link_to_remote_redbox().
Is there any way to open a redbox, or a different type rails-
compatible modal popup, from inside a controller action?

Recover rpm DB corrupted by disk failure?
Over the weekend my workstation (still on CentOS 3) started showing
SMART errors, so we shut it down and moved everything onto a new
drive. On reboot, the RPM database reports as corrupted and "rpm
--rebuilddb" segmentation faults.
Is there any reasonable way to recover from this, short of a complete
reinstall? The machine is otherwise up though it''s quite likely some

XFS vs. ext3
(Sorry for cross-posting; I'm not on either ext3-users or
linux-xfs, but I thought both lists might find this interesting.
CC me with any replies or questions. Thanks.)
(The last four paragraphs contain the interesting bits.
Basically, XFS hath kick-ed the *ss of ext3 under conditions
that are, for our company, critical.)
Some listees might be interested in some testing I did the other

I don't know whether it's wise to release the FTP-location
I would recommend everyone to just look over their daemons, and run

You got some 'splaininn to do Lucy ;-)
We just had a security application vendor come in. We asked about Linux
support and he said that putting a security application on top of an
insecure OS was useless. When I asked what he meant by insecure he replied
that Linux does not have a true Auditing capability - as opposed to HP-UX &
Solaris which they do support. Can anyone explain to me what he was talking
about?
Thanks,
Marty
