Yum/rpm error (rpmdb versioning issue?)

TypeError: rpmdb open failed
Trying to rebuild the rpm database results in a similar error. Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated as this is a remote system that
isn't easy for me to get physical access to. 8-(
