Compile R Library with GCC garbage collection on or supported
Hi All,
I'm not that familiar with configure or make (more of a Java developer as a
dayjob) but I was wondering what the process would be to add the flag
-fobjc-gcc in the compilation of the R library for use in an Objective-C
application. Can one simply drop this into the configure file somewhere?
Thanks,
Dave

OT: hardware: sanitizing a dead SSD?
Anyone have any clues about how to sanitize a dead SSD? We haven't had it
yet, but we're sure it's coming. Esp. since I'm a federal contractor, a
dead disk gets deGaussed, but what the hell do you do with a SSD?

I know, this is not the answer you want to hear, but it?s the one

not 100% sure you caught everything.

OT: Replacing Venerable NAS
...e flimsy boxes competing largely on price. Built in and supported from Silicon Valley, not China. :)
iXsystems sells rebadged SuperMicro stuff, nothing special (not made in
Silicon Valley).
We bought an iXsystems TrueNAS (commercial version of FreeNAS +
"supported" hardware) system at $DAYJOB about 2 years ago, with the
dual-node "HA" setup, and it was not a pleasant experience. Over the
first 6 months or so, our longest functioning uptime was about 10 days.
NFS would run and then just stop serving (no errors or anything).
Eventually, iX found and fixed a FreeBSD kernel NFS b...

OT: hardware: sanitizing a dead SSD?
Disclaimer: My $dayjob is with a government contractor, but I am speaking
as private citizen.
Talk to your organization's computer security people. They will have a
standard procedure for getting rid of dead disks. We on the internet can't
know what they are. I'm betting it involves some degree of paperw...

Possible to use MIT Kerberos yet?
Hey all,
$Dayjob currently uses MIT Kerberos. We also use Zimbra with Kerberos
auth, but Zimbra's LDAP is only internal to itself.
I see various things on the wiki that say "We need MIT Kerberos support
cleaned up for a 4.0 release"

Feature request: rewindable resampler
...e this request is, in my opinion, specific to PulseAudio
and ALSA (in ALSA - because of the need to implement snd_pcm_rewind()
for the rate plugin), I considered writing a new resampler from scratch
with this feature. However, I will almost certainly not start within the
next 3 months due to my dayjob and because of other TODO items, and
David Henningsson has hinted me to talk to you as an upstream of speex,
because, in his opinion, this "rewind" feature might be useful for other
applications. Hence this email :)

Migration of files with Windows ACL's to Samba server
Hi there,
It might that this question was already answered but I can't really
find any proper documentation for this.
I am in a process of migrating about 70T of files from our Win2016
storage server to a Samba (2:4.17.9+dfsg-0+deb12u3) server. Whilst
doing this I want to preserve all the ACL's which were set on Windows
shares.
Is there any related documentation around this topic how to

OT: does the LSI 9211-8i fit into the HP N40L?
Hi again,
thanks for all the replies to the all in one with ESXi, it was
most illuminating. I will use this setup at my dayjob.
Now for a slight variation on a theme: N40L with ESXi with raw drive
passthrough, with OpenIndiana/napp-it NFS or iSCSI export of underlying
devices. This particular setup is for a home VMWare lab, using
spare hardware parts I have around.
I''m trying to do something like

At $dayjob we got to see the advantages of this up close and personal a
few days ago when we had a hard failure in the voltage regulator/exciter
loop of one of our three primary generators during a utility power
failure. First failure of this kind since that datacenter was placed
online in 2008, and only...

No, not for that. If I had to do it at larger scale I would have
scripted it. I didn?t so it turned out to be cheaper, work-time-wise,
to do part of the steps by hand the few times I needed to do it.

what's the advantage of NetworkManager for server?
Hi:
I always use network-scripts to start network at EL7.
NetworkManager is not as good as network scripts under that OS.
but now EL8 said that network-scripts is depreciated. I wonder if
I should still use network-scripts to start network? I am afraid
there will be new bugs for the network-scripts, like systemd service
unit dependency. although it is solid at EL7.

Azure AD Connect and the challenge of funding Samba bugs
...ntil
the year of the pandemic covered travel for those who needed it.
Nobody is on the long-term payroll of the Samba Team, instead Samba is
where is is thanks to the spare time of our committed volunteers and
the work time of those who are supported by their employers to work in
Samba for their $DAYJOB.
What that does mean is that what gets fixed and does not get fixed is
in large part comes down to what catches the interest of developers who
some flexibility (in their job or their own time) or what paying
customers need via support or development contracts.
Now, to be clear we all work hard...

ssh host keys on cloned virtual machines
Hi list members,
does any one of you have a best practice on renewing ssh host keys on cloned machines?
I have a customer who never thought about that, while cloning all VMs from one template. Now all machines have the exact same host key.
My approach would be to store a machines MAC address(es). Then when starting the sshd.service, check if this MAC has changed. If so, remove all host keys, let

At home, I have a smaller LAN than you, but at $DAYJOB I work with much bigger fleets. Whether at home or work, everything is Linux-based, and OpenSSH is the primary form of remote access. I say these things to let you know that I appreciate your concerns, and although I've seen a variety of approaches, there is a surprising amount of commonality t...
