questions about zil
I recently got a new SSD (ocz vertex LE 50gb)
It seems to work really well as a ZIL performance wise. My question is, how
safe is it? I know it doesn''t have a supercap so lets'' say dataloss
occurs....is it just dataloss or is it pool loss?
also, does the fact that i have a UPS matter?
the numbers i''m seeing are really nice....these are some nfs tar times

attempt to access beyond end of device and livelock
Hi Dongyang, Yan,
When testing BTRFS with RAID 0 metadata on linux-3.3, we see discard
ranges exceeding the end of the block device [1], potentially causing
dataloss; when this occurs, filesystem writeback becomes catatonic due
to continual resubmission.
The reproducer is quite simple [2]. Hope this proves useful...
Thanks,
Daniel

- Openness on product specification.
Full specs should be available on manufacturer web site at no cost.
Proof of specs by testing of not-paid-for-it Third party? Good!
In your case, be very thankfull that you got 5 years out of the disks,

After some datalosses due to sudden drive failure, I'm replaceing my

is why I encurage you to replace your drive. Not to drive the economy.

Join multiple Gluster Cluster
Hi,
I Configured 3 Clusters (For several Shared Homes between different
maschines) .. So far no Problem.
Now it need a Volume that going across this maschines, but the nodes are
bound to there own clusters so peer probe fails .
How i can build one big cluster with all nodes but without dataloss (And
best without Downtime J)
Hope there is some Pro that can help J

Data loss (corruption with rsync)
Hello,
I just rsync'd my 1TB partitions formated with jfs filesystem
containing ~720GB data. I saw -3G difference between source and
destination which made me suspect possible dataloss. Also I had
experienced loss of integrity on my previous copies but I did not find
the cause until now.
As command line I used following:
sh-3.2# rsync --verbose --sparse --append-verify --fuzzy --progress
--stats --recursive --times --delete /mnt/miracle /mnt/storage
sh-3.2# rsync --version
rsyn...

Active Record: Can it auto-create database tables for you?
Hi,
Just get started with Rails and I''m trying to read ahead and find out
whether Active Record supports auto-creation of database tables for you?
Is this supported, or is the concept that you write your own database
DDL to do this?
Thanks

Expuning & Purging doesn't fully remove emails?
...9;m trying to limit the impact of mailbox corruption so that deleted emails do not come back if the index is somehow recreated again.
If I were to re-run expunge, purge, and force-resync a 2nd time... it does get emptied out, but I'm not looking to run force-resync intentially since it causes dataloss with mdbox, and re-running only expunge & purge doesn't seem to do anything.

XFS inode64 and Gluster 3.2.5 NFS export
Hi,
I've recently had dataloss on an XFS (inode64) glusterfs (3.2.5) NFS exported file system. I was using the gluster NFS server.
On the XFS FAQ page, they have this:
Q: Why doesn't NFS-exporting subdirectories of inode64-mounted filesystem work?
The default fsid type encodes only 32-bit of the inode number for subdirec...

How to backup maildir
I have been thinking, and reading, on how to back up my mailserver. I
have not found any approach that seems ready to use.
I have run years without any backup, but would really like to have
something in place.? I figure I can attach a USB drive and backup to
that, then from there rsync to something elsewhere.? Further if that USB
drive is a full mailserver image, I actually have a 'hot

you're a really lucky guy! - I've been struck in the past for such
carelessness on the one or other machine with dataloss ;-)

Replacing Win2000 DC with Samba4 - Success!
...nt machines!
The whole task (without copying the data stored on the fileserver) for
replacing a single Win2k DC with Samba4 serving 25 Clients needed app.
10 Hours including a lot of research in the mailing lists and taking
several snapshots of the (virtualized) Servers involved to prevent
dataloss.
Thanks to all involved for the perfect work!

Do I have a problem? (longish)
...e, until I decided to export/import the zpool to get correct names in the zpool config. After this zpool decided to use c2t11d0s2 instead of c2t11d0s1! s2 is the overlap backup space and on c2t11d0s0 is a mirror of my /export/home!!!!
I exported the zpool now to make sure I don''t get any dataloss. After export/import I did not write to the zpool, so I hope my svm /export/home is still clean, but I am not sure.
I did not detect this issue at once. I was experimenting with changing devices in a zpool with different size and rereading the manpages in between. So I don''t have the comp...

best filesystem choice for samba (was: new user cannotlogon)
ARGH! I'm wondering if airing thoughts about VFAT performance publicly
was a good idea.
I was only interested from a technical point of view - I would NOT
recommend using it on a production server unless there happened to be a
real case for using it.
The biggest thing to bear in mind in your case is that VFAT does NOT
support ACLs or disk quotas. It also doesn't support journalling and
