I would be very thankful if someone could clarify my mind about how to estimate the variance explained by my random factor and also when to use lower = FALSE versus TRUE.
Many thanks in advance

sshd problems openssh3.4p1 on 6.5.17
...nning 6.5.14)
running openssh-3.4p1. ssh was built on each machine using the same
configuration and were working fine.
I upgraded the OS on alpha to 6.5.17 and ran into no problems with sshd.
After upgrading beta to 6.5.17, we found that machines with hostnames
with the pattern, name.something.dartmouth.edu were denied access by
the tcp-wrapper code in sshd (determined by running sshd in debug
mode). It appears to think that these connections come from
255.255.255.255 (determined by syslog entries). If I add
255.255.255.255 to the hosts.allow, connections are allowed.
Machines with hostnames...

Why change data type when dropping to one-dimension?
...39;sapply', if your return value is one-dimensional be careful,
because the return type will not the be same as if it were otherwise.
Is this legacy or a valid, rational design decision which I'm not yet a
sophisticated enough R coder to enjoy?
Thanks,

Error with function lda in package MASS (dimnames not equal?)
...swered.
the last response I can find to this previous thread is here:
http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/help/04/07/0126.html. The asnwer was
to provide debugging info, not an answer.
So the problem is that I'm trying to use lda on my dataset. You can
download my data here:
http://northstar-www.dartmouth.edu/~jgilbert/nolda, I used R's save
function to save objects data and classes (yes, I realize that I name
stomped the data function in package utils). To replicate my results,
simply enter the following:
> library(MASS)
> load('nolda')
> lda(data,classes)

R Solves Shakespeare Authorship Question
..."The purpose of this paper is then to apply modern
text analysis techniques using the R statistical packege [sic]
to compare the works attributed to Shakespeare
to those of leading alternate candidates such as Sir
Frances Bacon, Christopher Marlow, and Edward de
Vere...".

I await the creative use of R to solve other vexing problems in the dramatic and performing arts such as the "Third Stooge Problem" and whether there is any naughtiness in the Britney Spears song title, "If You Seek Amy."
