Centos 8 and E1000 intel driver
Folks I know that support for the network adaptors supported by the 'e1000' driver have been removed from the base distribution. However, I have exactly that controller (Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet PCI, not PCIe). Is there a way for me to add support for that on Centos 8.1? Perhaps a driver in an RPM package? Thanks David

lshw in centos 7
Folks I've been running lshw for years in both Centos 6 and Centos 7, yet just recently it started hanging. Neither a Control^C nor a "kill" of the process cured the hang; only a reboot. When I run it by hand from the command line, it displays stuff on the next line overwriting it with things like PCI, USB. And USB is the last thing I see. A Control-C does not unlock it. I

Can't move to Centos 8
Folks I've been trying to convert my systems to Centos 8, seeing the EOL on the horizon a few years away. One of my systems is a Mac-Mini, and support for that has been discontinued. I'm wondering what the community suggests among these alternatives: 1) Stay with Centos 7 even after EOL hoping market pressures will add Mac-Mini support 2) Spend a few hundred dollars on a small,

ZFS fails with C7 957
Folks I have two USB connected drives, configured as a mirrored-pair in ZFS. It's been working fine UNTIL I updated Centos from 3.10.0-862.14.4.el7.x86_64 to 3.10.0-957.1.3.el7.x86_64 The import of the pools didn't happen at boot. When I tried executing: zpool list I got the diagnostic suggesting I do /sbin/modprobe zfs And that command claimed the module didn't exist. YUM

Remote Desktop Recommendations
Folks I'm looking for a way to access a GUI desktop on a Centos 7 server from a Windows client. I have tried: - X2go from EPEL (fails immediately, apparently they are working on a solution, but...) - Freenx (doesn't exist for EL7) Both the above work fine with Centos 6. Are there any known working solutions? Thanks... Mystified but not urgent in San Francisco David

firewall help request
Folks I'm struggling with my firewall settings, and would appreciate some help. I have a gateway machine (currently Centos 7 with IPV4 only) with two NICs. One is connected to the internet, the other to an internal network (10.0.0.0/24) of mixed hardware (windows7, android tablets, android phones, linux boxes) using NAT. I wish to block all outgoing connects to any external IP address

Understanding VDO vs ZFS
Folks I'm looking for a solution for backups because ZFS has failed on me too many times. In my environment, I have a large amount of data (around 2tb) that I periodically back up. I keep the last 5 "snapshots". I use rsync so that when I overwrite the oldest backup, most of the data is already there and the backup completes quickly, because only a small number of files have

Laptop turns off after lid closed Centos6
Folks I have a laptop which i am using temporarily as a test server. It is permanently plugged in. It is running Centos 6, command line only. In the past, I could close the lid, thereby turning off the display, but not turning off the machine. It remained running indefinitely. A recent update (this past week) changed that behavior. Now, when I close the lid, the laptop turns itself off

erasing a disk
Folks I've encountered situations where I want to reuse a hard-drive. I do not want to preserve anything on the drive, and I'm not concerned about 'securely erasing' old content. I just want to be able to define it as an Physical Volume (in a logical volume set), or make it a ZFS disk, or sometimes make it a simple EXT3, ExFAT or NTFS disk. However, old
