Multiple instances of .customflags staying open
...noticed a serious problem with my system. After about
an hour or so I get errors in /var/log/maillog such as this;

I investigated with 'lsof' and found that many copies of '.customflags'
were open for each and every folder. ie; Each folder's '.customflags'
file was open 15 times!
I suspect that postfix is not able to store newly collected email while
this is occuring, therefore I am likely losing messages.

No auto-conversion of .customflags?
Hello,
I'm in the process of migrating 0.99 dovecot maildir boxes to a pair
of new machine. These servers were running the stable (etch) 1.0rc15
package of dovecot until yesterday and existing .customflags files
were correctly converted to dovecot-keywords. Yesterday I upgraded
to the (finally, thanks to who did this) 1.0.0 etch backports package
and since then freshly migrated boxes get this error:

customflags considered a folder?
Hello,
i just switched from courier-imap to dovecot on a machine. The transition was
painless except for one issue - when using the "Check mail" feature of kmail,
one gets the message:
"Unable to get information about folder customflags. The server replied:
internal error..."
So it looks like the server isn't properly hiding the .customflags file for
some reason. I googled and only found one person who had seen something
similar, but no solution.
This is with dovecot 0.99.10.5. Similarly, 'customflags' does s...

customflags and keywords
OK. After checking the 0.99->1.0 migration documentation, it seems I've been a
little confused between customflags and keywords. (Though this is partly due to
my repeated requests for clarification being ignored.)
The page (http://wiki.dovecot.org/moin.cgi/UpgradingDovecot) says 1.0 does not
use .customflags any more. Now, I'm hoping they're still supported, in which
case I'm curious to know w...

Visibility of .subscriptions and .customflags
Hi, I upgraded to test65 from 0.99 (mostly to get the namespace feature) and
now it seems my .subscriptions and .customflags are showing up as mail
folders in my IMAP client (Eudora).
If I try and open those folders, of course I get an error.
How can I configure dovecot so that these aren't displayed to my IMAP
client? I looked through about 6 months of acrhives and couldn't find it
mentioned anywhere....

Customflags problem?
...mp right in.
I've been using Dovecot with Fedora for a bit with the default mbox
format. I recently transitioned to the Maildir format since some users
were getting mailboxes in excess of 1GB in size, which made expunging
and flagging no easy task.
Anyway, it appears now with Maildir, that customflags are "added"
instead of "replaced". I.E. in Thunderbird or Mozilla, if I set a
message label of 5 (Later), and then change it to 3 (Personal), all's
fine. However, if I switch it back to Later, or attempt to remove it,
the flags are not removed. When I examine the flags o...

Upgrade from 0.99.x to 1.1.x
Hi!
I want to upgrade a Dovecot installation from 0.99.14 to 1.1.15,
so I had a look at the following wiki article:
http://wiki.dovecot.org/Upgrading?action=show&redirect=UpgradingDovecot
The article http://wiki.dovecot.org/Upgrading/1.0 says something
about .customflags -> dovecot-keywords and
.subscriptions -> subscriptions change/conversion:
http://wiki.dovecot.org/Upgrading/1.0#Subscriptions
http://wiki.dovecot.org/Upgrading/1.0#Keywords
Do I understand it correctly that when directly upgrading from
0.99 to 1.1, Dovecot does the subscriptions renaming b...

...have write access to
dovecot-uidlist, we'll show only those mails which are already there.
- Out of quota/disk space failures are handled well now. All except
updating dovecot-uidlist file which is a bit tricky.
- :CONTROL=dir in default_mail_env can specify where to save
dovecot-uidlist and .customflags files. Useful for above problems.
I think maildir support is getting near perfect now. Only thing left is
to deal with failure to write dovecot-uidlist when out of quota. Oh, and
NFS safe .customflags file.

Upgrading from 0.99.10.5 to 1.1
Hi,
I am upgrading a setup from Dovecot 0.99 to 1.1. There are a bunch of
.imap.index* files that it appears that I can just delete, and they will
be recreated as dovecot.index* files. Right?
Next, there are some .customflags that I have now learned are not being
converted to dovecot-keywords (as we skipped the 1.0 version, and the
conversion code appears to be removed in 1.1). Is there some way to
convert this? Is it just a rename?
Thanks,
Anders.

Re: [ismail] Re: using Dovecot
...I've got some progress. I set rootmailfolder to "~/mail". When I login to

replaced by userdb and passdb. *_port were merged into *_listen.
Disabling listening in imaps port is now done by changing protocols

set any custom flags, move Maildir/.INBOX/.customflags into
Maildir/.customflags or they will be lost.

if they're found and mail_default_env isn't set.

Newbie-ish Questions
...m supposed to accept the Maildir folder itself as the inbox? If so, please just send me on my way ;-)
Also, since I don't know much about IMAP, where can I find out what the .subscriptions file is, and what it does, and also all the other files created by dovecot, like the .imap files and the .customflags
Thanks,

Fwd: Re: Newbie-ish Questions
...open it locally (using Mutt) I can still see the mails in $HOME/Mail/.INBOX
So, I'm not sure if there's something wrong with my .INBOX, or if it's not even looking there.
When I move new mail to the inbox in the remote client, it moves the mail to $HOME/Mail, and creates cur/tmp/new/.customflags directly into that folder, instead of using .INBOX, which is the folder underneath that!
Is it buffering some information/setting/mapping somewhere? I've restarted the dovecot daemon each time.

"important" flag
I'm wondering what I'd need to do to get the "important" flag set on an
incoming message according to a pre-specified header.
I know the problem of this not being a "joined-up" feature in standard
email, but in practice many MUAs set headers like X-priority etc, and IMAP
has an "important" flag that is the obvious mapping.
I'm not really sure where

NFS mounted IMAP dirs
Hi list,
I am trying to build an email system that is using multiple frontends, to a
clustered backend using nfs. The backend mounts his filesystems from a
central storage, and will be running active-active.
While reading through the dovecot documentation, I read that I could do
without indexes (well: use memory indexes), and could then be able to run
dovecot over NFS. Well: that was until

Purpose of files under .imap
I've got a user with an unusable account. Tbird just sits in a loop
endlessly logging in over and over when a particular folder is selected.
What files under .imap associated with that folder can be safely deleted?
What's stored in all of them?
I see all of these:
.customflags
dovecot.index
dovecot.index.cache
dovecot.index.log
.imap.index
.imap.index.data
.imap.index.log
.imap.index.tree
