hda: no DRQ after issuing WRITE
I upgraded my Centos 4.7 server last night. Switched from a cheaper
50$ asus motherboard to a Supermicro motherboard. I also, using dd,
copied entire 500g SATA seagate drive to new 500g SATA seagate drive
so as to have two copies in case something went wrong.
Anyway, now I keep getting this error:

kjournald using up majority cpu%.
We run several RH7.2/7.3 servers & recently 2 of them, although still
working fine, have started to show kjournald as generally using over 50%
cpu% on 'top' - virtually continuously. Free cpu% generally less than 25%
now!
Both machines are also using software RAID5 EIDE ....... otherwise are
standard server installs.
Any info on what kjournald is & why it should have recently

On very different journalling activity on 2 servers.
Hello Folks,
We have 2 (identical hardware) busy public 2U rack servers, both have
several hundred users & peak email (for example) deliveries at 300/5min
during the daytime.
Both servers run RAID1 over 2 EIDE disk drives.
One server is fine - it never has problems - it is running RH7.3 and CPU
loads are normal.
The other server has constant disk activity & kjournald at CPU load of

Really bad KVM disk performance
Hi Gang,
I recently rented a server at a datacenter with Centos 5.7 X64, Q9550
Processor, 8GB Ram, and dual 250GB SATA HDs (with 16mb cache). They had
loaded it with KVM, and installed a 30-day trial of Virtualizor as the
front-end for KVM.
I was so impressed with how fasts the guests ran that I want to build a few of
these machines for myself. I just installed one: same Q9550 processor, 4GB

Troubles with my HDD
Hello all,
I am new to this list and hope that my mail is not OFF TOPIC. After
looking around for 2 months now, to find a solution, I will try it here now.
Now the scenario: I bought a new cool dell laptop:
INSPIRON 8100, 512MB RAM, NVIDEA GeForce2Go 32MB, 30GB Hitachi hard disk
and a DVD. I bought it with WinME preinstalled, because it wasn't
possible to get it with linux nor without an

Workaround for RH #502499?
I have a workstation with a Gigbyte board and an Intel Corporation 82801EB (ICH5) SATA Controller (rev 02) that's apparently getting bitten by https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=502499
It's running CentOS 5.4 32 bit, and the user is suffering from high load and sluggish response whenever a disk write of more than a few MB is made. iostat shows the disk at 100%.

Slow disk access on Dell Latitute with ATA/ATAPI-5 T13 1321D
Hi...
I have a Dell Latitute with an ATA/ATAPI-5 T13 1321D and it would seem
that my disk access is extremely slow. I have the latest updated kernel
from RedHat 8.0 kernel 2.4.18-27.8.0. Somehow I think it is related to
the UDMA stuff (shows my level of understanding). I have run hdparm and
although I think I should at least udma level 5, I have at most udma2
listed. Is this a kernel

Quantum IDE HDD DMA issue.
I am running RH 7.3 with kernel 2.4.18-27.7.x.
Recently I have added a new 60GB Quantum IDE hard drive to the server. I
have set it up as a MASTER on a separate IDE channel. Two partitions on
the /dev/hdc are /dev/hdc1, /dev/hdc2 - both using ext3.
For more detailed HDD parameters, this is 'hdparm -i /dev/hdc':

ext3 2.4.21 htree tests
Hi,
Just thought I'd share some test results of mine in case anyone is
interested.
Basically the tests are siumulating what our product does with files -
although the tests do it a lot quicker (not as many files though).
The test is to create 1 million files (each containing the text of the
file number) spread over a number of directories. The files are then
removed in the same manner as

Bug in ext3=journal ?
Hi all!
While I was having some fun, testing different filesystems at home and
making some benchmarks, I hit a bug when running Postmark in an ext3
partition mounted with data=journal.
I repeated this test twice and got the same results under Linux 2.5,
also it was not found while mounting with data=writeback or data=ordered
or under Linux 2.4.
I don't know if it's a know problem or

How do I check if the proper sata drivers are being loaded?
If they are not what can I do other then rebuilding the kernel?
Thank you in advance,

PRI got event: HDLC Abort (6) on Primary, D-channel of span 1
I also experienced this problem and the first thing that really helped out was changing the timing in the span line of the zaptel.conf. Change it to look like this (see below) and see if it helps out. I got the error much less after doing this and eventually got rid of the error completely by removing my raid drives, installing an IDE drive, enabling DMA mode on the Hard Drive, enabling APCI in

kjournald tuning
While investigating erratic performance on one our our servers,
I'm getting some very odd performance stats coming from vmstat.
What initially appeared to be happening is the machine goes into a hard loop
in some mod_perl webserver code.
Now there still may be an issue with the code, but my code examinations show
no possible way this could be happening, but what I'm writing to you

Long Shorewall Startup Times Revisited
Hello,
With reference to the problems listed below. I too am having
incredibly long start up times. I''m talking minutes here (around 5
minutes).
My configuration is not complex I don''t think. We are you using ldap
too and the settings are bellow. The network is up as I''m restarting
shorewall whilst the machine is running.
Any suggestions? Is there no way to

sync slowness. ext3 on VIA vt82c686b
When I copy a file(13Megs) from /home/ to /tmp/, sync takes almost 2 minutes.
When I copy the same file to /usr/local/, sync returns almost right away. Both
filesystems are ext3 and are on the same harddrive. When sync is running,
the harddrive light stays on but I don't hear it doing anything. dmesg doesn't
show any errors either. Below is the `time` output for each command. If you
