Renato, I don't think it would take that long to make a little script that even an XP user could use to generate GPT formatted thumb-drives. I believe someone made the Rufus utility for just such an occasion Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way Rufus Create bootable USB drives the easy way Rufus is a utility that

Unfortunately I can't use GPT partitions because the usb stick are created by non-technical users and lots of them are still using xp 32 bits. Win32DiskImage rulez. :-D Bonus: No more geometry problems on old BIOSes. Just create a nice GPT formatted image with a cool protective MBR. This can even expose the first partition via

The RAW nature of Disk Imager fails to leverage the unique intentions of UUID to surmount the problems of multiple bootable drives in the same system for purposes of knowing which one you actually booted from and should continue to use. Determine from which device syslinux booted from
Then again, I suppose you could have a script in your init that detects when it has been booted from a *special* UUID. In such cases it goes to the first instance of a volume with that *special* UUID and re-writes it to a genuine UUID, as well as updates the syslinux configs on the volume. You could then create your seed image with that *special* UUID and then even an XP user could write it to a

There are no pre-compiled binaries (official or otherwise) on kernel.org. I assume what is meant is https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/boot/syslinux/ At least, that is where the "downloads" page of syslinux.org directs you. Under there are the various source tarballs (tar.gz format, tar.bz2 format). Also a directory called RPMS/. But that kernel.org RPMS/ directory is devoid of

10 year old question
Thank you for that. I?ve set up the thinstation-v5.6.1.iso in vm and setup the chroot. I did my first ./build ?allmodules and wrote the iso to usb using lili version 2.0 so that I can boot with older syslinux. I am doing this for the needed hardware profile to build from inside the vm however the usb has been stuck on the syslinux version line with a line following: Thinstation..... for 30 minutes

Looking for ways to save space - AKA how to boot multiple machines from the same root
Because everything I searched on for a PXELinux mailing list pointed me to here. And because PXELinux is a derivative of SYSLinux. If there is a better mailing list for my questions, please let me know. Since you say its possible, care to enlighten me on how to do so? I actually propose another strategy that may kills many birds with one stone. I think it should be able to be handled internally. Right now, we take a kernel argument as a literal file name hdt.c32 really mean load file hdt.c32. That great, it works, that is how most config files are written. All we need to do is change the expectation a little from a literal to a directive with a literal

I'll play the security advocate.... So most of the people that implement tftp services have almost no idea how they work....and that's o.k. They do however have a few fundamental beliefs that they expect to be true, and it is those beliefs that they use to make decisions when implementing a service and it's data structures. If they are not true, then they are likely vulnerable to an

I have several machines, same hardware and config, but one tiny little change.. the hostname. Each one of these diskless machines needs its own hostname. Presently my pxelinux.cfg is setup like: prompt 1 default Gentoo timeout 10 label Gentoo kernel boot/kernel-3.16.5-gentoo APPEND root=/dev/nfs rw ip=dhcp nfsroot=192.168.1.10:/RAID/diskless/XXXXX-mythtv-0.27-fixes,tcp,rsize=131072
