Network configuration question
...CentOS 5) with a "classical" configuration: On the ground floor, there is the telephone jack with the DSL modem router (192.168.1.254). This modem has a mini-switch with two Ethernet jacks to it, and the two are used by: - the server (192.168.1.1), a "black box" running in a cupboard 24/7 - the wireless AP (192.168.1.253) Then, on the first floor, everything is connected by wireless, and for the moment, configured statically: - my desktop PC (192.168.1.2) - my laptop (192.168.1.3) - my wife's laptop (192.168.1.4) I have an older laptop here, a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo D, t...

Converting file system
Hi @all! I tested what happens with a file which is saved at a FAT32 partition and then this partition is converted to NTFS. So first I transfered the file with rsync from the FAT32 partition to my Linux /home folder. Then I converted the FAT32 partition to NTFS. After the convertation I transfered the file again to see what has changed (amount of data). I was surprised!!!! Nothing has changed!!!

I guess a lot of the design decisions made for things like init were focussed on this. In 1995 is was common for server platforms to have 32Mb ram whereas the kernel alone in my

Problem with the game "Pilgrim"
...story, riddles and atmosphere and so I would love to play it. Unfortunately the game crashes at a specific point in the game, which did not happen on my old Win95-PC (doesn't exist anymore). For those who might be familiar with that games, its when you place the Salome-scroll in the slot in the cupboard to open the secret passage. I do have no clue why that is, I tried already all kind of settings in the wine-config. I run wine 1.2 on Ubuntu 10.04. I hoped, when I attach the error ouput somebody might be able to help. Here is, what the debugger posts: Code: :~$ cd .wine/drive_c/pilgrim/ :~/.win...

Shorewall performance
I have a couple of firewalls that are rather complicated - one has 21 interfaces, and the other has about 50 (there''s some heavy use of 802.1q, they only have half a dozen network cards). They work okay, but - compiling the rules takes a long time even on the faster servers, and restarting shorewall-lite takes between 5 and 10 minutes (during which time, only the routestopped stuff will

Back in 2013 I did some Linux training for a company in Montpellier. The first week the server racks hadn't been delivered yet, so we were stuck. In a cupboard, I found an antique Dell Poweredge 1300 server that was out of service, made around 1997 or so. I dusted it off, found a power cable, a monitor, a network cable and a keyboard and connected the thing. It had a P-III 500 MHz processor, 3 x 9 GB SCSI disks and a whooping 128 MB of RAM, and not a sing...

British Voice talent records Asterisk prompts
...itish comedienne, Alison Keenan (another Alison!) coming in on Saturday afternoon to record the Asterisk prompts for me. Alison speaks with a "posh boarding school" accent. Finally we'll have a free British English female voice bank. As I have her in my studio (yeah right; it's a cupboard under the stairs) does anyone need anything doing? She's charging a Pound a word with a minimum of 20 quid. Interested parties should drop me an script email as well as relevant funds to my paypal account (markp@enicomms.com). Expect to see Alison's work up on g7ltt.com later next week in...

high availibilty (heartbeats) - a good way to ensure automatic redundency?
being from a telecoms background, the thought of a single asterisk box solution (even in a low production environment of say <10 phones) worries me slightly! starting from say a base of asterisk@home, you would have several MySQL databases, in addition to numerous config files. I have looked at high availiblity solutions, and from a hardware monitoring point of view, its relitivly straight

xen kernel headers, new kernel modules with a-i
Hello Pkg-xen-devel list, I am running lenny with xen-linux-system-2.6.18-4-xen-686 (xen 3.0.3) installed. I'd like to put this server in the cupboard and access it via wifi. To build the wifi kernel module, it should hopefully go like this : apt-get install madwifi-source madwifi-tools m-a a-i madwifi modprobe ath_pci ... Except that I do not have the sources nor the headers of my kernel. "apt-get source xen-linux-system-$(uname -r)&quo...

Get your SXCE on ZFS here!
With the release of the Nevada build 90 binaries, it is now possible to install SXCE directly onto a ZFS root filesystem, and also put ZFS swap onto a ZFS filesystem without worrying about having it deadlock. ZFS now also supports crash dumps! To install SXCE to a ZFS root, simply use the text-based installer, after choosing "Solaris Express" from the boot menu on the DVD. DVD download

Shorewall redirect with Squid and Dansguardian
Hi all, I''ve just built Mandrake 10.1 on a Compaq Deskpro that I''ve built as a router/firewall and am redirecting port 80 outbound to force users through the Content Filter. I''ve run this setup on Mandrake 9.0 and 10.0 without any problems but this time the following happens. Squid is accessed through port 3128 and Dansguardian via 8080. If I set my browser on a

Samba Packages
I am running Solaris 11, which includes samba 4.4.14.    The packaging method has changed from Solaris 10, and you need a support contract to register the system for the latest version.   I have no idea if Solaris 10 includes samba 4.x. I think to configure or rebuild Samba on Solaris 11 as an AD Directory Server/Domain controller would be difficult, since Solaris does not include the
