Is this just a benign error since the cluster still seems to be working, or ? Thanks P -- http://philcryer.com

Default lag.max in ACF
Hi, The default value for lag.max in ACF implementation is 10*log10(N) There several publications recommending setting lag.max to: - N/4 (Box and Jenkins, 1970; Chatfield, 1975; Anderson, 1976; Pankratz, 1983; Davis, 1986; etc.) - sqrt(N)+10 (Cryer, 1986) - 20<=N<=40 (Brockwell and Davis) Why R uses 10*log10(N) as a default? Please, give me a reference to a book or article where the recommendation for using lag.max=10*log10(N) is proposed and explained. Thanks Rafal

Arimax with intervention dummy and multiple covariates
...n of the various models (the different model specifications dropped variables or added additional covariates, etc, without changing the general structure of the syntax below), I defined the following design matrix: > xreg.1 <- model.matrix(~CO1+ CO2+ CO3+ CO4)[,2:5] c. Following Cryer and Chan (2008, ch. 11, p. 255), I wrote models such as this: > arimax.1 <- arimax(VI, order=c(0,1,1), + xtransf=data.frame(xreg.1,dummy1=DUM), + transfer=list(c(1,0),c(0,0),c(0,0),c(0,0),c(0,0))) d. So, I get estimates for the following coefficients: ma1; CO1-AR1; CO1-MA0; C...

predict a MA timeseries
Hi, could anyone tell me how predict() predicts the new value(s), of a MA(1) arima-modell. its really easy to make it with an AR(1), knowing the last term, but how can i or R know the last error? It would also help if somebody could tell me how to find the "open" source of the function predict(). Thanks and sorry for my poor english. -- View this message in context:

Serie temporal interrumpida del tipo AirPassengers
Hola usuarios, Necesito detectar si existe o no un cambio de tendencia y si dicho cambio es significativo, para una serie temporal del tipo AirPassengers, en la que a partir de un determinado momento se ha hecho una campaña (supongamos que una promoción de vuelos). Para ello he pensado varios métodos: Usar la descomposición espectral de la muestra [decompose(AirPassengers)] y luego una Regresión

Rounding problem R vs Excel.

An excellent source of information about the incompetence of Excel as a statistical package can be found on Jonathan Cryer's web page at http://www.stat.uiowa.edu/~jcryer/JSMTalk2001.pdf Some incredible howlers from their ``help'' pages are given, as are a number of useful references. [Stat related] Understanding Portmanteau test
Sorry to be off-topic. Can somebody please explain me what is Portmanteau test? Why it's name is like that? When I would say, a particular test is portmanteau test? I did some googling but got no satisfactory answer at all. Please anybody help for understanding that? Regards, -- View this message in context:

Who uses R?
Dear R users, I have started work in a Statistics government department and I am trying to convince my bosses to install R on our computers (I can't do proper stats in Excel!!). They asked me to prove that this is a widely used software (and not just another free-source, bug infected toy I found on the web!) by suggesting other big organisations that use it. Are you aware of any reputable

time-series statistics collection
Hello, I am trying to collect several global measures or statistics for time-series as well as packages of R that can compute them. I have found several of them in papers and books, but the literature is so big i am sure i am missing several of them. skewness kurtosis min max mean SD trend seasonality periodicity chaos (Lyapunov Exponent) / Largest Lyapunov Exponent (i think is the same

ARMA with other regressor variables
Hi, I want to fit the following model to my data: Y_t= a+bY_(t-1)+cY_(t-2) + Z_t +Z_(t-1) + Z_(t-2) + X_t + M_t i.e. it is an ARMA(2,2) with some additional regressors X and M. [Z_t's are the white noise variables] How do I find the estimates of the coefficients in R? And also I would like to know what technique R employs to find the estimates? Any help is appreciated. Thanks,

client mount fails on boot under debian lenny...
Hi Is there clean way to ensure that a glusterfs mount point specified in /etc/fstab is mounted automatically on boot under debian lenny when referencing a remote node for the volfile? In my test case everytime I reboot, the system tries to mount the filesystem before the backend 10ge interface comes up so it gets a "No route to host" and immediately aborts. I know I can dump a mount

the joy of spreadsheets (off-topic)
Given that we occasionally run into problems with comparing Excel results to R results, and other spreadsheet-induced errors, I thought this might be of interest. http://www.nextnewdeal.net/rortybomb/researchers-finally-replicated-reinhart-rogoff-and-there-are-serious-problems The punchline: "If this error turns out to be an actual mistake Reinhart-Rogoff made, well, all I can hope is that
