MPEG DASH
...an inefficient codec.
I suppose the reasoning is that drops in quality are preferable to
playback interruptions, but why tolerate either in a well-designed
system? Adaptive streaming seems to say "we know the Internet is not
really cable TV, but we are going to work around that by providing a
cruddy picture for those times when available bandwidth does not align
with our business model" :-)
In the Icecast community, we might gain more by promoting Opus as a more
efficient replacement for MP3 streaming, for example.
Cheers!

More newbie questions.. Calling out to CGI, Reusing Responses, Multi-thread..
...I''d like to reuse a
response. However, I couldn''t instance a response because it requires a
socket. Therefore, I assume it''s not meant to work this way. Possible?
Finally, am I right in thinking that you can run a multi-threaded
server, albeit with Ruby''s cruddy threads, by doing something like this:
h = Mongrel::HttpServer.new(''0.0.0.0'', ''3000'')
[h.run, h.run, h.run].each { |t| t.join }
Thanks,

Automatically Cleaning Kerberos Credential Cache Files
...resence of
expired credential files was preventing Postfix from delivering mail to
those users' mail spools. If I delete the credential files manually,
Postfix immediately delivers the queued emails.
Currently, I have a cron job deleting the files manually every night.
Obviously, this is a cruddy solution. I have Dovecot configured on a
RHEL 6 box. The Pam stack on a RHEL 6 machine uses sssd (pam_sss.so) for
authentication with Kerberos, not pam_krb5.so. I'm trying to track down
which piece of the puzzle is responsible for cleaning up leftover
credential caches. Is there a configura...

You shouldn't need to, no.
I'm guessing you've got a cruddy version installed from somewhere else, else
the yum install would have just worked, but I'm just guessing as you've not
posted anything to say what happened when you tried the yum install.

If the FLAC output really did sound different the a theory more
plausible to me is the idea that the player software was buggy and
managed to send the FLAC sourced data through a different signal path?
one that got some cruddy resampling, for example? but this theory is
mooted by people being satisfied by uncompressed flac.
Though of course the people promoting this misinformation don't want
to discover actual bugs like that? far better to promote non-existent
snake oil solutions to non-existent problems because it...

This is a huge bug! Using Firefox to watch videos is a basic activity.
The bug with grub2 a few months ago was even more serious: it made
systems unbootable. It's discomfiting to see two major bugs so close
to each other.

iconnect
Hi,
I was able to connect asterisk to iconnect's service.
It took me almost two hours, but it's because I was having NAT trouble.
I finally discovered that you can set the iconnect host to
natrealy.deltathree.com to make it work.
(for those of you who, like me, don't have the time to search the
archive I'll provide a working sample in a minute)
My problem was sound

Xen boots to blank screen
It seems like there are several messages in the archive and in various
forums about this problem, but I do not see a clear course of action for how
to solve it. I am relatively new to Linux, compounding my problem. I just
built a new machine for the express purpose of running Xen so my girlfriend
and I could experiment and learn about different Linux distros. I am running

Doubt in Rsync !!
Sir,
How to run the rsync server in the remote machine.
I want to mirror the set of directories from one machine to another
machine
which are in the network.
I used the following command :
/usr/sbin/rsync -vv --delete --recursive --times --perms --update
source directory
destinationmachine:destination directory.
I got the error:
Permission denied.
How to tackle this error ?
thanks

What's up with the Manager Interface?!?!
The Asterisk Manager Interface is driving me nuts.
Whoever wrote it should be drawn and quartered.
Sometimes the data comes back separated by \r\n, and sometimes it's separated by \n.
The whole thing is completely inconsistent, and trying to write any kind of API for it is -GHASTLY-

Job market Rails, Java, C++, etc
I have been sending out my resume to whatever Rails jobs I can find.
There is a limitied supply unless you want to relocate. It seems like
the Rails stuff out there gets alot of applicants, though I am not sure
if they tend to be locals, very experienced etc.
I have also been applying for C++, Java, and Perl jobs. I have alot of
background in C++, but am a little rusty. I have done some Java, but
