LVM overhead? Does it cripple I/O?
For a high-performance system (64-cores, 512GB RAM, 5TB local disk, 110TB NFS-mounted storage) is there any advantage of dropping lvm and mounting partitions directly?
We're not planning on changing partition sizes, but if we did we'd probably do a full rebuild.
Has anyone done performance testing to show that lvm isn't crippling I/O?
Thanx,
Russell

update: Win2kPro's TCP/IP Stack is crippled!
I've been doing some testing between Windows 2000 Pro (SP4) and Windows 2000
Server (no SP and SP4) -- specifcally testing file transfers from a Samba
2.2.8a server.

Crippled file list on samba 3.0.23-c2. Debian Etch x64 (files randomly not showing up)
Hi there people.
My first post here at the list so I hope I havn't made any misstakes so
far and that I can write in such a way so you people understand me. =)
The problem I have is that when I list folders on disks mouted with "mount
-t smbfs ..." the file lists of folders are crippled. What I mean is that
files are randomly missing in the lists even if they are there. A refresh

Open a file which name contains a tilde
Hi,
As I can see via path.expand a filename which contains a tilde anywhere gets automatically crippled.
+> path.expand("a ~ b")
[1] "a /home/user b"
+> path.expand("a ~ b ~")
[1] "a /home/user b /home/user"
I want to open a file regardless whether its name contains any character unless 0.

updated R-cairo bridge, official R-3.1.*-mavericks.pkg crippled, snpMatrix 1.19.0.20
The windows replacement is

in
http://sourceforge.net/projects/outmodedbonsai/files/R/
The cairo replacements are just two bundles, windows or OS X - containing
replacements for R 2.15.3, 3.0.3 and 3.1.2. You just extract the relevant one
for your R version.
The windows builds of R packages snpStats x.x.x.8 and snpMatrix 1.19.0.20

Re: [nbdkit PATCH] noextents: Add hook to cripple SR advertisement
I'm very lukewarm on this one. Why is this a plugin-level feature?
For other protocol things we have used command line options (eg. -o /
-n and the various TLS options).
Also I understand that this found a bug in qemu-nbd which is great,
but why else would it ever be needed?
Maybe we can control this with some kind of command line protocol
flags, and try to emphasize that, like the -D flag,

ADS data crippled after joining Samba into active MS domain
Hi together,
after joining Samba 4.1.6 into our domain with 2 MS Win2008 R2 DCs on last Friday, we had got 2 accidents:
1. one of our users couldn't access his Exchange account any more (the relation to the correct mailbox database was empty)
2. Exchange 2010 Outlook Web Access (OWA) fails today on Monday with following error message:
[PS] C:\Windows\system32>Get-OwaVirtualDirectory

Users with large (4GB) inboxes crippling dovecot
Hi all,
I'm new here and would very much appreciate any help you can give me.
We are running a rather outdated mail server that until recently has been
running beautifully. Under the pretense of "it is ain't broke, don't fix
it" it hasn't been updated so is running Fedora Core 4 and dovecot v0.99.14.
What is happening is that as users log in (via thunderbird), they

IAX2 client for "eee pc 1000"
What kind of IAX2 client will install/run on EEE PC 1000 (stock Linux software)?
I'll eventually replace this crippled Linux with something better but I don't time to play around with it as most divers and modules are still too new and
not fully available in all distros.

ADSI Programming
Hello Everyone,
About a month ago, someone put a question to the list about which ADSI
spec to purchase from Telcordia. I looked in the archives, and it
appears that this question was never answered, so I'll put it to the
list in a slightly different manner: Do I need to purchase the
Telcordia specs in order to learn how to write my own ADSI scripts? If
so, which one?
I found the Black

fixing partition alignment ?
Hi there,
I've discovered that most of the hard drives used in our cluster got
misaligned partitions, thus crippling perfs. Is there any way to fix
that without having to delete/recreate properly aligned partitions, then
format it and refill disks ?
I'd be glad not to have to toy with moving several 10s of TB disk by
disk :D (most disks are JBOD as we're using a fault tolerant network

Shortened sharenames
Doing a little shell scripting with smbclient and noticed that
smbclient -N -L host
only displays the first 13 charachters of the sharename.
Since that is totally crippled feel like I must be missing something
obvious, but can't track it down. Any pointers on getting FULL sharenames
using smbclient?
Thanks for the help

Hard system restart when DRBD connection fails while in use
Hi all,
I have two nodes (A+B) running a DRBD file system (using OCFS2) on /shared.
If I start say, an FTP file transfer to my drbd /shared directory on node A, then reboot node B which is the other machine in a Primary-Primary DRBD configuration while the transfer is in progress - node A stops at a similar time that DRBD notices the connection with Node B has been lost (hence crippling both

Build VirtualBox OSE for CentOS?
Is there any need for CentOS to build and distribute the OSE version of
VirtualBox?
The differences between the versions are here:
http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Editions
The reason I ask is that the Full version is free for personal use and
the restrictions (especially no USB or RDP) make the OSE version fairly
crippled, so I am not sure there is enough benefit to design and keep
