APC Back UPS?
...our models, a few images online seem to show an 8-pin jack labeled "data port" for the BackUPS Pro 1000 and BackUPS NS 1080.

I'm sure they do. (sell extra cables) -- plus if you have crimpers and a USB cable with a dead micro/mini end, making another cable wouldn't be hard.
It's most definitely not Ethernet.
LIke I said - I have a BackUPS 350... it has the 8p8c modular connector and came with a cable that plugs into USB.

Network configuration question
Hi,
My wife and I live in a two-storey flat, and we have a small home LAN
(100% CentOS 5) with a "classical" configuration:
On the ground floor, there is the telephone jack with the DSL modem
router (192.168.1.254). This modem has a mini-switch with two Ethernet
jacks to it, and the two are used by:
- the server (192.168.1.1), a "black box" running in a cupboard 24/7
