I am unhappy with "disk" too.
But that change would have a much wider scope in the text.
"Disk" is the term used by the starting point of the partitioning
endeavor in SYSLINUX#Creating_a_Bootable_Disk
"In order to create a bootable disk using SYSLINUX,
prepare a normal MS-DOS formatted disk."

This is hopefully a feature, not a problem. :o)

This could be added to
http://www.syslinux.org/wiki/index.php/SYSLINUX#Creating_a_Bootable_Disk
statement:
"In order to create a bootable disk using SYSLINUX, prepare
a normal MS-DOS formatted disk."
Like
"If in doubt, make a backup of your disk content, create a new
DOS partition table, create a new partition, and format it.

Hi,
i have now sparsely modified the last paragraph of
http://www.syslinux.org/wiki/index.php/SYSLINUX#Creating_a_Bootable_Disk
added a new section
http://www.syslinux.org/wiki/index.php/Common_Problems#Bad_Heritage_on_MS_DOS_disk
and a new article
http://www.syslinux.org/wiki/index.php/What_is_a_SYSLINUX_disk_%3F
My proposal is to place a link to the new article at all wiki
occasions, where the reader might wonder w...

I was following the instructions at
http://www.syslinux.org/wiki/index.php?title=SYSLINUX#Creating_a_Bootable_Disk,
there's no reference to mtools on that page. Maybe they should be
unified?

The general wiki
http://www.syslinux.org/wiki/index.php/SYSLINUX#Creating_a_Bootable_Disk
says
"In order to create a bootable disk using SYSLINUX, prepare a normal
MS-DOS formatted disk."
which would not have helped me to avoid Ronald's problem.
I would have considered any existing FAT as "normal".
Maybe one should add a link to a new section

Hi,
hpa:

Then
http://www.syslinux.org/wiki/index.php/SYSLINUX#Creating_a_Bootable_Disk
should point to a tutorial for mkdiskimage.
I cannot spot any occurence of "mkdiskimage" in
http://www.syslinux.org/wiki/index.php/SYSLINUX
http://www.syslinux.org/wiki/index.php/HowTos
Is there already a description at other places ?

Thanks.
I have now edited
http://www.syslinux.org/wiki/index.php/Hardware_Compatibility#USB-Miscellaneous
------------------------------------------------------------
Next i'll try to develop a user oriented hint for
SYSLINUX#Creating_a_Bootable_Disk
which takes into respect the opinions of Ady, Mattias, me,
and of any other who has a viewpoint to add.
This needs well thought, because it might be the first thing
which an annoyed and partially clueless user reads about
mad USB sticks.
Have a nice day :)

You can still use a different wording in a linked section. If "disk"
is not the best choice for the new section, then choose a better
term.

Times change. Terminology must be adjusted to keep up.

Advice/directions to users of Syslinux
Hi,
i now realized that
http://www.syslinux.org/wiki/index.php/Hardware_Compatibility#USB-Geometry
http://www.syslinux.org/wiki/index.php/Hardware_Compatibility#USB-Miscellaneous
are the new wiki sections by Gene Cumm. (Sorry for not reading
them when they were announced.)
So i ask especially him whether the statement

This is reasonable.
Please have a look at
http://www.syslinux.org/wiki/index.php/User:Scdbackup
The first section shall become the new text of

But it is in wiki page Hardware_Compatibility.
Check out the neighborhood.
If there is a place to - for once - state how a "normal"
