Updating WordPerfect Office
The version of Wine that ships with WPOffice 9 is getting pretty creaky. As far as I can tell, Corel doesn't have any updates on their site, but as far as I know there's no reason that someone couldn't update their version. Anyone have any luck with this? I'm still trying to reproduce their build parameters. -- | I'm old enough that I don't...

modestly priced laptop for C7
I'm looking to replace my (old, creaky) netbook (Acer Aspire One D255e, a screaming dual core 1.6 GHz Atom, and a whole 2 gigs of RAM) with something faster but not too large. Sometimes (usually) the netbook is painfully slow. Something like a hi-res 14 (or 15) inch screen (full HD), minimum of 4 gigs RAM, HD of a half terabyte or big...

What to read about interactions
...auth for user validation and delivery. I have the usual anti-spam machinery in there, and have started using the (for me new) pigeonhole implementation of sieve. (My old mail system was built around the earlier dovecot implementation, and while I've patched it over time it's really pretty creaky.) On the whole, this all seems very nice, but I'm having a hard time understanding the details of what interacts with what other bits when. In particular, my mail system is known by several different names, and I thought it'd be much handier to have everything land in one real mailbox, sin...

Should dovecot not be using different logging facility and severity levels?
Should dovecot not be using different severity levels like auth.warn? On my system everything goes to loglevel info: lev_info:Aug 9 16:18:24 mail03 dovecot: imap-login: Aborted login (auth failed, 1 attempts in 2 secs): user=<xxxxx>, method=PLAIN, rip=x.x.x.x, lip=x.x.x.x, TLS, session=<UBXJ2K+PYh68zmjw> lev_info:Aug 9 16:18:29 mail03 dovecot: auth-worker(28656):

ruby rails performance
Hi- We just finished our app and I tested for performance with httperf. Our setup is browser -> apache2.2-> mod_poxy balancer-> mongrel cluster -> 3 mongrel servers. I have noticed that the total request per second is is about 7.5. When I increase the no of mongrel to 5, it inches up to 8 req/s. My question is how bad or good this number is? We are on a old dell 2400 machine

Dovecot for imap with LDAP
I am looking at replacing our creaky old courier-imap server, which takes authentication and user info from an LDAP database, with dovecot imap. Any comments on the wisdom of this choice of action, or anything I should know about the setting up before starting to work on it?

Vista SP1 performance fix - maybe!
...were good). Eventually discover that NO new hardware (i.e. thumb drives, wired keyboards, anything) will install. OK. Uninstall SP1. Install Intelli point 6.2 again and Lo! and behold! the hardware installs. Great. Test the network response time without SP1. Now, there is nothing particularly old, creaky or obscure in my setup. I've got a PowerEdge 800 running SBS 2003 for a server and a Cisco SB2024 Gigabit switch. It took 5 MINUTES to copy a 61 MB file. Sigh. Install SP1 again. Hey, the hardware still works AND I can install other new hardware. It's a miracle. Test the network response ti...

migration to subversion
Everyone, We are at long last migrating the xiph.org source repository from to subversion. We've been wanting to do this for some years, but have been waiting for a conversion script that could deal with our creaky old cvs repository. Subversion, although perfectly usable for the past two years, recently announced a stable 1.0 release, and more importantly the major issues with the cvs2svn script seem to have been resolved. So, time to make the switch. Please hold commits this coming saturday, march 20 u...

How to disable SSL and TLSv1.1?
I'm running Dovecot 2.2.5 and want to make it refuse SSLv2, SSLv3 and TLSv1.0. Clients will opportunistically use TLS 1.1 and 1.2, but now I want require they do so. Is it enough to set ssl_cipher_list = HIGH:!SSLv2:!SSLv3:!TLSv1.0:!aNULL:!MD5 or are there additional settings I need to specify?

I/O freeze after a disk failure
Hi all, yesterday we had a drive failure on a fc-al jbod with 14 drives. Suddenly the zpool using that jbod stopped to respond to I/O requests and we get tons of the following messages on /var/adm/messages: Sep 3 15:20:10 fb2 scsi: [ID 107833 kern.warning] WARNING: /scsi_vhci/disk at g20000004cfd81b9f (sd52): Sep 3 15:20:10 fb2 SCSI transport failed: reason ''timeout'':

transition to ip6
I imagine some day in the near future there will be a switch to ipv6. I cannot imagine ever remembering the ip address then...crazy. My question, since i have never done ip6 stuff, is what does that mean on my webservers? Would I just need to replace my ip4 with ip6 in my eths, bonds, bridges, and configuration files...and copy out my iptables to ip6tables, and change the dns servers? all
