Samba 4 AD - Samba Fails to Start, hdb_samba4_create_kdc (setup KDC database) failed
...r hunch that the database is corrupt holds true it couldn't be from hardware failure as this domain was provisioned after that incident. I do believe I may have traced where any possible corruption might have originated though... I (apparently foolishly) started backing up /var/lib/samba with CrashPlan after the hardware failure incident... I'm guessing that was a bad idea. > Do you have a backup, made with samba_backup ? > ( shown here : https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Backup_and_restore_an_Samba_AD_DC ) > > Because i think you db is corrected and beyond recovery. Carbonite on Wine?
...ee that it is made mostly of java scipts. One of these is Installation.js, which I'm guessing is the one that starts it all off. It seems like I remember reading somewhere that Carbonite depends on IE somehow. Anyways, Carbonite on Linux would be absolutely fantastic! I guess I'll move to Crashplan if I want unlimited backup for Linux if Carbonite doesn't pan out in Wine. It's just that there are lots of people who have already bought subscriptions to Carbonite and then moved to Linux or and then found out about unlimited backup for Linux (like guess who... me). At the time, I think C...

As far as I am aware, you cannot backup a running Samba AD DC with anything that doesn't use tdbbackup, unless you stop samba. > >> Do you have a backup, made with samba_backup ? >> ( shown here...

centos 6.5 input lag
...le it's up, I have severe input lag in the shell. I'll type a few characters, and two to 10 or so seconds pass before anything echoes to the screen. I've checked top, practically zero CPU load. It's not swapping - 16 GB of RAM, 0 swap used. Most memory heavy process is java (for CrashPlan backups). iostat shows 0% disk utilization. Anyone seen anything like this? Where else can I check to try to determine the source of this lag (which I suspect might be related to the recent crashes)? Thanks, Matt

I can't think of anything else I could have done that would've caused such a drastic failure and would like to know so I don't repeat the blunder in the future, this has been a royal PITA. JS

Ransomware?
...how many files changed between each snapshot. If you ever notice a larger than normal number of deltas you can look further to see if something is making mass changes of things. If you see more the X number of deltas, it could sent an alert. On the commercial software side of things, services like Crashplan and Carbonite and other provide point in time restores. Samba File Share Encryption How To?
Hello, Can someone please point me to documentation on encrypting a file share? Looking to have data created on a Windows workstation backed up and saved on a Samba file share across a WAN link. Currently using IPsec so I assume I'm good on the transport end? Thanks. -- -James

Samba AD/DC crashed again, third time in as many months
...e case. I rebuilt the domain, it failed again about a week later with roughly the same behaviour as I'm seeing now. I worked with the samba-users group over a period of about three weeks to troubleshoot the issue, we settled on my database being corrupted beyond repair, at the time I believed CrashPlan backup was to blame, but again I suspect that may not have been the case, or at least it wasn't the only issue in play. I removed all Canonical samba packages, downloaded the latest samba source from samba.org, compiled and installed samba 4.3.3. I then provisioned the current domain and rebu...

Deduplication data for CentOS?
Hi list, is there any working solution for deduplication of data for centos? We are trying to find a solution for our backup server which runs a bash script invoking xdelta(3). But having this functionality in fs is much more friendly... We have looked into lessfs, sdfs and ddar. Are these filesystems ready to use (on centos)? ddar is sthg different, I know. Thx Rainer

Looking for a CentOS-friendly online backup company
Hi all. We've got a lot of customers running CentOS 5 and 6 servers. We've been asked by many to provide backup, which is something we don't want to do in house. So we started looking for backup companies to partner with. The problem is that the ones we've found who support RHEL won't support CentOS. So does anyone know of an online backup company that _will_

Samba AD/DC crashed again, third time in as many months
Samba is compiled from source. Samba DB is stored on local RAID array. Changes to AD are done using ADUC from a Windows 7 box. AD is used for authentication, user shares (folder redirection), and shared folders.
