Searching R Packages
Dear Spencer,
Nice initiative!
I discover a lot of packages not by explicit search, but by running into
them. I find cranberries really helpful there, especially the twitter feed
(@CRANberries) and also r-bloggers, especially through Joseph Rickert's
monthly roundup of new packages. And then of course there is the R journal
and JSS, but those speak for themselves.
So maybe a 'keeping up to date' section would be...

running a script repeatedly
Dear Debian People:
Is there a way to run a little script (on Ubuntu Manic Meerkat) every hour, please?
I know that this is more of a LINUX/UNIX question rather than an R question. Sorry.
Thanks,

customizing layouts for functions
I want to be able to have different layouts in my rails program for
different functions.
For example, when a person first comes to the site the layout will have
a link that says ''home'', ''login'', or register on the menu bar.
Once the user logs in however, the layout will change. I want it to show
the links ''account manager'',

[ANNOUNCEMENT] cran2deb: 1700+ new Debian / R packages
...is essentially a '2.0' version of earlier work with Steffen
Moeller and David Vernazobres which we had presented in 2007. Then, the
approach was top-down and monolithic which started to show its limits.
This time, the idea was to borrow the successful bottom-up approach of
my [2]CRANberries feed.
The bulk of the work was done by Charles Blundell as part of his Google
Summer of Code 2008 project which I had suggested and mentored. After
that project had concluded, we both felt we should continue with it and
bring it to 'production'. The CRAN hosts provided us with...

Is there a perl equivalent of .= in ruby/rails??
I want to make a for loop that concats strings onto a variable:
html .= var1 + "this is a test" + whatever
What is the syntax that does this in ruby/rails?
Also, is there a ''print'' method in ruby? Because when I try to use
render_text it will only let me use this once.

Duplicate entry - how to check if an id exist before saving?
How do I check if an entry exists before saving?
Someone one told me to use the method find_or_create (or something like
that)
but it didn''t work because I think the version of rails that we have is
not the most recent.
I need a way to check if an id exists in the db before saving. Any
suggestions?
Thank you

The cran2deb archives target testing.
I just pulled a package from them onto a stable system; the library

Warning message:

Are this and other packages likely to work correctly with different R's
(2.7 in the case of stable)?
How well are they likely to work with a backported R? The R version

Need to use a method without the layout
I need to use a method (called by one of my controllers) without using
the layout. All the other methods in the controller need to use this
layout except for thismethod (becausae it''s called by an Ajax script). I
know how to use :layout=>layout_name when calling a method from another
method, but nothing is calling this.
The layout needs to be removed in the method itself or I need

RSS Feed of NEWS needs a hand
Years ago Duncan set up a nightly job to feed RSS based off changes to NEWS,
borrowing some setup parts from CRANberries as for example the RSS 'compiler'.
That job is currently showing the new \I{...} curly protection in an
unfavourable light. Copying from the RSS reader I had pointed at this since
the start [1], for today I see (indented by four spaces)

how to store package options over sessions?
Hi,
I posted this a week ago on r-help but did not get an answer. So I hope that someone here can help me:
I want to define some options for my package the user may change.
It would be convenient if the changes could be saved when terminating
an R session and recovered automatically on the next package load.
Is that possible and if yes, is the standard way to implement this?
Thanks,
Mark

suggestion for R >= 3.0: computer-readable CHANGELOG
Hello,
Here are a few questions that would be useful to get an answer via
dedicated functions in utils or tools packages:
- When did function foo appeared in R or in a given package?
- When did argument myarg appeared in function foo?
- When did function bar get deprecated or when did it disappeared?
- I wrote a script using functions foo and bar with R 1.9.1. My script
does not work any more
