general questions about samba 302alpha
I tried to use samba 3.0.2alpha in a ldap environment ( netscape 4 diretory server ) with xp sp1 and window 2000 server as client. I followed the ignacio coupeau tutorial's. I have some questions about samba 3 architecture and nt 2000 in general. Ignacio coupeau have 2 domain's logon, with exactly the same configuration. it seems to work on my lan but I'd like to understand how. I can suppose sid on the two netlogon server are different. How...

Samba 3 LDAP account db concepts
...tc/passwd." Do I still need to employ LDAP NSS and PAM modules ? Ver 3.3.0 does not seem to support a configure --with-ldapsam option, does this mean that the defualt --with-ldap installs what used to be done with ldapsam ? The referenced "Samba (v.3) PDC LDAP howto" by Ignacio Coupeau (2004) is achieved with configure --with-ldapsam and no mention of pam modules is made. So, my basic question is: What are my options, given what i want to achieve? And can someone shed some more light on the concepts involved ? Thanks in advance and sorry if I have missed something obvious i...

HowTo Chapter12 Group Mapping and LDAP
...the essential Domain Groups, and assign each its default RID." I am not sure what this note is to infer? Does "net groupmap" handle things or do I manually have to configure via LDIF entries? I have read chapters 1-12, 21, 25 of the howtos as well as Samba PDC LDAP howto by Ignacio Coupeau. Is there another document I am missing or am I just not getting it? I have not posted config files or system specifics because I feel this is more a problem understanding the concepts not configuring the system. If someone could either point me in the right direction or explain what I am missing...

Samba3, LDAP and FreeBSD 4.8 : need for NSS ?
...4 nor 2K, only from an old Samba 2.0 with security=user using /etc/passwd, ie. no encrypt password). This Samba3 should be hosted on a FreeBSD 4.8 (ie. pam_ldap can work, I tested it today, but no NSS available). I've read many docs, including the HEAD Samba HOWTO collection, HOWTO from Ignacio Coupeau (worth a read), old one from IdealX (which disapeared last week, I still have a hardcopy), and many others. The OpenLDAP 2.1 is up, with a few accounts populated (with both sambaSamAccount & posixAccount objectclasses). PAM_LDAP auth works. Then comes the integration with Samba. I have not yet...

Samba/LDAP documentation
...nd higher use patched Sleepycat's BDB 4.2.52, are mostly guaranteed against corruption (if correctly configured using DB_CONFIG) and even in the case of a corrupted DB (which I've *never* experienced, whatever) can be repaired. Samba's NT groups as documented in the HOWTO (Terpstra and Coupeau) are worthless. (Sorry JT). OL 2.2 don't like Unix GIDs or UIDs with spaces in their names (f.ex. "Domain Admins"). Worse, Linux don't like them. Worst of all, it looks like shit on an 'ls -l'. I have my own alternative method which works perfectly. That's what I'd...

Unrecognized Samba service.
Hi, I installed CentOS 4.3 on my machine which comes with Samba 3.0.10pre-installed. I want to use the latest Samba 3.0.22, so I uninstalled Samba package (rpm -e samba, rpm -e samba-client, samba-common can not be removed due to the package dependency). I then downloaded Samba 3.0.22 and installed it on my machine. However, when I try to start samba service and got a "Unrecognized Samba

Migrating to LDAP
Can anyone point me to a guide on migrating Linux and Samba accounts to LDAP? I can only find part guides, and I can't figure out how to get the account data combined (without a lot of manual effort). I can get the Linux accounts over no problems. I then tried to do "pdbedit -i tdbsam -e ldapsame -s /path/to/modified/smb.conf", but it only manages to stuff things up by skipping

migrate old samba2.2.8 - smbpasswd to new samba3.0 - ldap - based
I'm just migrating a medium sambainstallation from old samba2.2.8 to new samba 3.0. The server is acting as PDC and there is no BDC. The new samba is based on LDAP and is already successfully tested. Now I need to transfer the whole old smbpasswd to the new ldap-style to convert users and machines with minimal effort. Especially I dont want to break the relations between the machines and

At 4 a.m. it finally worked...Samba 3, interdomain trust, ldap, winbind
...then delete it. All of this was done because I finally got things configured correctly to make it all work. Along the way, I read so much stuff at such odd hours. Without the help of others, this could never have been accomplished. A how-to by Carl Weiss was critical. So was the info from Ignacio Coupeau and the official Samba 3.0 documentation. So now I have two PDCs (one NT4 and one Samba 3 on Linux) that trust each other. Therefore, a user in one domain has access to shares and resources in the other by vitue of that trust. And it's a single sign on because winbind knows the users and group...

3.0alpha23 not authenticating with LDAP (RedHat 9) - Help needed!
Hi! I am trying to migrate to a new server, with a shiny-new installation of RedHat 9. I have downloaded the 3.0alpha23 rpm intended for RedHat 8.0... I am also using the stock RedHat 9 version of OpenLDAP. By itself, LDAP is working fine: this is how I log onto my Linux boxes. I am including one sample user (me) below, which I extracted using "ldapsearch -x". Great - this is

ldapsam:trusted = yes : trouble getting it to work
I have been trying for a while now to enable set the parameter ?ldapsam:trusted? to ?yes? in smb.conf but as soon as I enable it, users cannot access shares anymore. I am trying to enable this because the users are member of a lot of groups and I want to take the stress off the ldap server. I have searched the lists for previous posts with the same problem and I tried to figure out if it has been

PDC and BDC load-balancing
Hi there, I would like to know how Samba / Windows determines which domain controller should handle a logon request, and whether there is a way I can affect the process. Here's the situation: I have a school installation running a Samba domain, with a PDC (1.1GHz Celeron, 256 MB RAM) and one BDC (much smaller, 366 with 64 MB RAM), both with RedHat 7.1 and Samba 2.2.5. There are about 80

Adding machine account to LDAP with pdbedit fails
...machine account with pdbedit. My setup is the latest samba (3.0.21b) compiled from source on Solaris 10, SUN's latest JES' Directory Server. I am in a beginning stage of setting up this environment, so I may not have done something right. I was following the Samba PDC LDAP howto by Ignacio Coupeau (http://www.unav.es/cti/ldap-smb/ldap-smb-3-howto.html), a link to which is being provided on the official Samba howto page. I've attached the output of following command: # date;pdbedit -a -m -u baltika -d10 The DS error log show this [19/Feb/2006:11:20:21 -0600] - ERROR<5896> - Schema...

samba and ldap
I have successfully setup samba (2.0.6 on redhat 6.1) to authenticate users and get all user account information (home dir etc) from an ldap server (openldap 1.2.7 on freebsd3.4) with win95/98 clients using nss_ldap/pam_ldap and plaintext passwords. I would like to use the same setup with client-side encryption ie. between client (win98) and samba server, but have been unable to. My question is
