netlogon error?
Greetings all,
I'm running a RedHat 5.0 (kernel 2.0.32) Linux box with samba 1.9.18p7 and
I'm having a problem with my netlogon share. NT domain logons are working
just fine, but I keep getting the following message in /var/log/messages,
repeated every day for every user logging in:
May 26 09:08:09 gromit PAM_pwdb[23002]: 1 authentication failure; (uid=0)

CHOOSING THE PROTOCOL LEVEL
===========================
The SMB protocol has many dialects. Currently Samba supports 5, called
CORE, COREPLUS, LANMAN1, LANMAN2 and NT1.
You can choose what maximum protocol to support in the smb.conf
file. The default is NT1 and that is the best for the vast majority of
sites.
In older versions of Samba you may have found it necessary to use
COREPLUS. The limitations that led to this have mostly been fi...

I also captured some packets. I found the client claims that it can support
SMB1 (neither smb2002 nor smb2???).
then got message "unrecognized protocol dialect", but I check the source
code in negprot.c (not exact) and find "SMB2" is an option (like CORE or
COREPLUS).
My question is: why smbclient does not recognized "SMB2". Do I miss some
configuration parameters? Could you please tell me? Thanks a lot

I don't have any lines in my configuration file for any of the servers,
how can I tell what the default protocols are?
Are the defaults controlled by samba or the kernel?

OS/2, DOS LanMan, Amiga and Solaris 2.4 patch for Samba
...ooks a bit like the infamous "DIR ..\" bug in NT (which Microsoft first blamed on Samba!). If you have Warp 4 or Connect I would very much appreciate it if you could try and see if you get the same problem. One final note: when smbclient is forced to use one of the older SMB protocols (-m COREPLUS or smaller), the problem is gone. Of course, you'll lose support for long file names then, and many other things.

The "username" parameter indicated which user should be used when it was

Passwords fail from Win95 but not from DOS (Samba 1.9.16p11/NetBSD)
...client uses an
appropriate protocol but still fails with similar messages.
So, I'm a bit stumped. Is this an encryption issue? - I noticed some
mention of 'challenge' in the logs. I have since compiled the DES
stuff in, but not yet tried it, I assumed using a lower protocol (even
tried COREPLUS) would fall back to using its authentication method.....
Anyone have any suggestions? I'll append some log extracts in the hope
it helps (the Samba host is zeppo, the Win95 PC is chico and the DOS
client is shagnasty).
Thanks,
Simon
