Best CentOS to install on *old* laptop?
I've found an old IBM OmniBook 800 and am curious whether I can get it going again. (Currently it boots either Windows 95 or some then-contemporary version of Slackware.) The CDROM is external (SCSI, I think) and the machine won't boot from it, so it'd require a boot floppy. Any suggestions? Or is CentOS entirely the wrong Linux to be thinking about for this?

Intel D2500cc video problem: no scrolling
Dear colleagues, in the process of upgrading my home router I'm trying to utilise Intel D2500CC mini-ITX motherboard[1]. Both stable/9 and head suffer from no scrolling issue: from the beginning of booting the kernel, all output overrides the last line on the screen, while others keep the loader phase. Provided the board has multiple serial ports and the final target (headless

Level of support for ARM LLD

As far as I know those using older processors are also using older versions of FreeBSD (with a toolchain based on GCC and Binutils). So old and new have to coexists Having to maintain old environments, or upgrading them to something contemporary, is an old, old problem. It's the worst when the old hardware can no longer be obtained, and the backup media can no longer be read. [LLVMdev] x86 unwind support[MESSAGE NOT SCANNED]
...be there does exist a programming language that never calls (or is called by) programs in other programming languages and never runs in an environment where one of its threads may be terminated. In that case, interoperability of generated code doesn't matter. In the heterogeneous world of the contemporary OS I'm not sure if that's a common case. Andrew.

Questions on this upgrade scenario
Hello! I've encountered a CentOS 6.10 server running Samba 4.1.0 compiled from source running as a Domain Controller in a small office. It's being used for some basic AD functionality and sharing folders to a half dozen Windows desktops on the local network and everything seems to be running fine. I'd like to modernize that setup with Ubuntu 22.04 LTS running the latest and greatest

The patch you pointed me to does not apply to the current release of openssh unfortunately (v7.2p2). Do you have a more contemporary version of the patch I can try? I can google around for a logging socket... I assume this can be implemented without the patch you referenced and on the current version 7.2p2?

Does irqbalance actually do anything?
...s and examine the interrupt counts. Given that there is an IRQ balancing scheme in the kernel, I have to wonder if irqbalance is actually being used. The man page for this program consists of a single-sentence description of what the program does. Nice. Does irqbalance really do anything on contemporary Red Hat-based systems? Thanks.

lots of warnings from translate.c
We have a couple of servers with asterisk 1.4.19 and zaptel 1.4.10, acting as gateways from SIP to ISDN PRI interfaces. Each has one Digium TE420 (with hardware echo cancellation) and one TC400B for transcoding, in order to handle 60/90 contemporary calls in peak hours. In my logs there are hundreds of thousand warnigs per day like these: transcode.c: no samples for lintoulaw transcode.c: zapg729toalaw did not update samples ### Could you suggest me what are the possible causes for that? Are they signs of bad audio quality? Any ideas for re...

.... Xv is the only other thing I might possibly care about, and it's working well too. The performance is great compared to the alternatives! Thanks! In the wiki, I noticed that the Debian installation instructions are considered out of date. Why is this? Everything in them is accurate for contemporary Debian, modulo one minor detail. If it's merely endorsement, I'm pretty Debian saavy and willing to vouch for their accuracy. -- Ross Vandegrift ross at kallisti.us "The good Christian should beware of mathematicians, and all those who make empty prophecies. (This is what you'd get via the classical "dd /dev/mem" approach or the contemporary equivalent using the crash driver; and VMware Server and Workstation produce .vmem files, which are such raw physical memory images, when a guest is paused or snapshotted.) In order to analyze the memory of Libvirt/KVM guests with my Linux memory forensics software, Second Look, I've created a...

Using voice modem as poor man's FXO in Asterisk 1.8

I have managed to set up Asterisk 1.8 on the web server here. I have two softphones (Ekiga) able to communicate with it. So far so good. I'm now curious to see if I can link it with th...
