Article for wiki consideration
I've recently documented simple use of a VServer with CentOS host and guest. toracat@ said that it might be worthwhile putting on the wiki. The present article is located at http://home.nyc.rr.com/computertaijutsu/vserver.html If it does get to the wiki, I would remove the fedora section and also add a notice at the beginning of the article with dire warnings about using a non-stock kernel. (I would probably copy the warning on red background from http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Custom_Kernel) Thank you for...

Guide to Using KVM
Hi all, Our CentOS Forum contributor, "scottro", has written a guide to using KVM with CentOS-5.1 and made it available at: http://home.nyc.rr.com/computertaijutsu/centoskvm.html He is offering it for us to put on the CentOS wiki. I would be happy to wikify it and welcome any comments and suggestions. The contents will be updated as he adds more to his writing. Akemi

CentOS on the Aspire One
...g a wiki article about it, and probably will unless there are strenuous objections. The objections might come from the fact that outside drivers are required for wireless, webcam, sound, and even wired ethernet. I have an article on my own pages, with a CentOS section at http://home.nyc.rr.com/computertaijutsu/aspireone160GB.html Note that I used Alan's kmods--I also tested Wolfy's dkms rpms for the wired ethernet and they also worked. I went with Alan's in this case because kmods are usually a bit less work and they were the ones I was using when I wrote the article. Thanks for any fee...

laptop article on 4720z
I have a page I've done on the 4720z. It involves using 3rd party packages. The original page, which covers several distributions, is at http://home.nyc.rr.com/computertaijutsu/acer4720z.html I would just use the laptop template, with a link to my page on it for the webcam, as in works with 3rd party software, see <link to my page> and wireless, works with 3rd party software, see <link to my wiki article about the AR5007EG.> So, it would just resemble other...

screen
Hi - under CentOS 5, has anyone be able to get the vertically splitting under screen to work? I downloaded the latest screen-4.0.3 and the wrp_vertical_split_0.3_4.0.2.diff.bz2 patch for vertical splitting and I still can't get it work. ^A | doesn't do anything. Horizontal splitting works fine. -- Agile

Installing FreeBSD-Stable and Upgrading to FreeBSD-Stable
I am a newbie trying to get the most current Stable version of FreeBSD running. I have been using CVS to update my system, but things don't work after an update. For example KDE 3.1 (from KDE 3.0) doesn't start using startkde. I am looking for instructions on the best way to Install the lastest version of FreeBSD-Stable and how to Upgrade the system in the future. Thanks.

OpenLDAP authentication, account expired when it's not.
I am trying to set up LDAP authentication for CentOS workstations, but can't get it to authenticate properly. Authentication fails saying the account has expired when I know for certain that it has not (e.g. ldapsearch authenticated with the appropriate uid and password returns shadowLastChange 14816 and shadowMax 99999). The last time I did this seriously for authentication was using Apple

When I try to print on my HP Officejet J4580 I always get the error ---------------------------------- Printer Filter "foomatic-rip-hplip" for printer "oj" not available: No such file or directory ---------------------------------- What I find puzzling is that I have googled for this, and it appears there has been the same

[OT] Fetchmail and Mutt help
Hi All, I setup Fetchmail and wanted to use Mutt to read e-mail. I used to use Pine and I just am sick of GUI e-mail clients these days. Bloat, complication and unreliable. Pine was my first ever e-mail client. I prefer to use POP still as I want may mail on my machine at all times. I can go into mutt and execute: 'fetchmail -v' and watch it bring down my e-mail. But in mutt i dont see

HP Network Printer Issue - Resend
I sent the following message back in June, but I must have missed the reply: I'm attempting to install and configure HPLIP (HP Linux Imaging and Printing) software on my CentOS 5.3 x86_64 system without success. I've got a HP Officejet Pro 8500 multi-function printer connected via ethernet. I'm getting a message saying that it cannot locate the libcups module

User Details
I have some questions on how I can perform the following actions from the terminal in CentOS 5.5 final. My Google searches aren't helping and I keep seeing references to the command 'useradd' but this isn't present on my box; -How to add a new user? $ useradd -bash: useradd: command not found (This is the same for my normal user and when logged in as root) -How to set/change an

How to add a HD to a LVM
I have connected a HD that was a prior system drive (Centos 4.8) and I am not sure of the command line procedures to find out if it is recognized (I believe it is since it present in the GUI), delete all data on it and finally add it to the LVM. I would like to use it as a backup data drive. Todd -- Ariste Software Petaluma, CA 94952 http://www.aristesoftware.com

OpenLDAP setup and bootstraping in CentOS 6
I'm having trouble getting openldap through its initial setup. I created a /etc/openldap/slap.conf file with a default rootdn and rootpw, and they didn't seem to take effect. After much wailing and gnashing of teeth I found that if there is a config directory at /etc/openldap/slapd.d, it will ignore slapd.conf. I can't figure out how to translate slapd.conf into the (new?) standard

securing ldap with tls and security
Hello, I'm trying to set up a centos 5.3 machine to do authentication via openldap. I've got it working, I'm not sure if I have it 100% right, but I can use ldapsearch to query the directory, use finger, id, chown, and other utilities with ldap usernames and groups, log in via ssh as an ldap user and if it's a new user automatically have the home directory created. Having got this

Network Scanner and CentOS 5.5
I have an HP Photosmart 3210 All-in-One color printer. Printing works great, but I cannot get xsane to locate it on the local subnet. I've been to the sane site and looked at the backends. The HP 3210 is supported by hpio and there is a note that hpio is no longer needed because the functionality has been rolled int hplip. yum shows hplip is installed: hplip.x86_64 1.6.7-4.1.el5.4

good shell script examples?
I am looking for a beginner guide to shell scripting simple tasks on CentOS (e.g. ssh'ing into a server / router / switch, checking for certain things, then exiting and going to the next IP). Does anyone have any suggestions on where to look? (I'm relatively new to bash) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:
