How are people doing gain control, out of curiosity? I know boxes exist (anyone have names and mfrs?) that ride the gain for big radio stations, ensuring that there is no distortion and raising the volume of songs recorded at a lower volume. If you are in a loudness war (ie. broadcasting) and/or concerned about dynamic range you need some sort of AGC-compressor-soft limiter combination. Aphex happens to make another favorite unit for this called the "Compellor". It isn't as aggressive as other processors such as Bob Orban's, or Frank Foti's boxes but it is "transparent" with good AGC and some loudness. ...hem. I found that their sweet spot is only a 10dB of range. Much beyond that they start to sound crappy. I may have mentioned this on the list in the past, but Aphex makes some rather nice boxes that do very well by having a wide dynamic range and very little artifacts. You can usually find the Compellor (compressor) and Dominator (limiter) on Ebay for about $300 and $500 respectively. You also need to balance the levels on your mixing board (so that the correc t level comes at predictable place on the slider). Hi: I want to stream audio from my soundcard, but I'd like to apply some dynamic compression to it first (ala winamp's audiostocker plus shoutmuxer thingy). I heard rumours of compression in liveice, but Iv'e been told that this only works when it plays from prerecorded MP3, not the live input. I'd like to do this with darkice, but can't see how it could be done. I guess
