new laptop: DVD or Blu-ray
One of the build options for a laptop I'm looking at buying is DVD vs
Blu-Ray. I've never used Blue-ray before, so is there some compelling
reason, as a Linux guy, to want to get Blu-ray?

dm-multipath use
Are folks in the Centos community succesfully using device-mapper-multipath?
I am looking to deploy it for error handling on our iSCSI setup but there
seems to be little traffic about this package on the Centos forums, as far
as I can tell, and there seems to be a number of small issues based on my
reading the dm-multipath developer lists and related resources.

[LLVMdev] MCJIT debugger registration interface.
...CJIT knows about to the debugging interface that the LLVM client knows about. The mcjit's current architecture makes this extremely awkward.

> This is part of a bigger problem in the MCJIT API: it is designed to work like an execution engine for C programs despite the fact that the most compelling use of MCJIT is a higher-tier JIT that is part of a mixed-mode or tiered runtime for non-C languages. Is there some client of the MCJIT that actually benefits from the MCJIT pretending to be an execution engine for C programs? Is there a reason why this client should get more attention than the se...

It would depend. If there was a *really* compelling use case it might be
worth it.
I think what you're saying is basically: the linker is currently much
simpler and easier to maintain due to the fatal errors on corrupted input,
globals for the "context", etc.
We need a compelling use case to give that up, and nothing sufficiently

[LLVMdev] Any objections to my importing GoogleMock to go with GoogleTest in LLVM?
...maintain. I'm not claiming to be the biggest fan of some features in GoogleMock, but on the whole, I think it's better than the alternative and will allow more careful testing of C++ APIs where the interesting part is the API itself.
Personally, I rather not do this, without very clear and compelling reasons.
I understand that this could be very useful for your bringup (and so could be very useful locally), but once the passmanager is the default, it will get lost of in-tree testing by just about everything in the compiler.
I'm not really excited about dragging another out of tree proje...

Once you have a reliable identifier for a device, it is not compelling
to store metadata against each device as you can reliably identify the
device from data in the existing metadata block. I don't find the
atomicity argument very compelling, because even if hidden behind a
single libvirt API, it is still fundamentally multiple operations in
libvirt which are jus...

Worth upgrading desktop to 5.1?
I am using CentOS 5.0 on my desktop workstation. Are there any deeply
compelling reasons to upgrade to version 5.1? I read through the release
notes but didn't see any whiz-bang new features. Perhaps some of you can
share your personal experience letting us know if you have noticed any
differences, etc.

Choosing a samba version for DC use
...only? (i.e. no file sharing)
I note that:
* CentOS 7 comes with samba 4.2.10 - labelled as "do not use" on
https://www.samba.org/samba/history/ !!
* Ubuntu 16.04 comes with samba 4.3.11 (although 4.3.12 exists)
The Ubuntu/4.3.11 option would be my default choice - but are there any
compelling reasons for going with 4.4.x or 4.5.x from the start?
Presumably that would require compiling Samba from source?
Thanks,
Brian.

extending liveness of 'this' pointer via FAKE_USE opcode
...e serious customer interest in having the 'this' pointer visible throughout an entire function during
debugging. However, optimizations may eliminate it after its last use, so we've been looking for a way to artificially extend its
liverange to the end of the function.
So far, the most compelling way we can think of, and one we have used successfully in the past in at least one other compiler,
is to create a 'fake use' of the 'this' pointer at the end of the function, compelling the rest of the compiler to not optimize it away.
At the moment there doesn't seem to be a g...

v1.1.20 vs v1.2 & v2.0
I am currently running v1.1.20 and was wondering if there is any
compelling reason to upgrade to v1.2 or v2.0?
For example is there any security updates in v1.2 or v2.0 that aren't
included in v1.1.20?
The other major thing I would be interested in knowing is there any
speed enhancements in the newer versions? I am using basic PAM Auth and
Maildir mailboxes on a...

Any compelling reasons to upgrade to 5
Just popped back on the list because I was curious about this. I've read
the information about virtualization and other new features. I'm just
wondering (as someone who installed CentOS 2 years ago and basically
hasn't thought much about it my OS other than using it since then) if any
piece of it except for virtualization got updated significantly enough to
consider an upgrade. My

For the cases where you have containers and other non-trivial objects, I completely agree that this is compelling. However, for simple cases like string equality I don't like the change from EXPECT_EQ(a, b) to EXPECT_THAT(a, Eq(b)).
Which brings me to what I guess is my main question. Are we going to be able to keep using EXPECT_EQ (and others) via gtest? Or are we going to slowly migrate from gtest to...

[OT] Best Blog + Wiki opinions?
Hello all,
I''m looking for suggestions for integrated Blog + Wiki (Bliki) apps. I''d
prefer Rails, I want to hear opinions on all options!
I''ve browsed through W:Bliki <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bliki>. Nothing
in that list is immediately compelling.
This is for my wife, who is not a technologist, and has a need to create a
information-centric website. I''m looking for options that would allow blog
integration as well.
Question to answer for your suggestions: In the bliki you suggest, does the
blogging filter understand wiki formatti...

The cost is the extra time spent verifying that the binaries are fresh.
In my experience it has never happened that I ran "make check" on a
wrong set of binaries. On the other hand, it does happen that I run
"make check" repeatedly, when working on...

RFC: Reconsidering adding gmock to LLVM's unittest utilities

might look like or why they might be attractive
4) I didn't provide any real explanation of what gmock *did* and so it was
vague and unclear.
Since then, a lot has changed. We have more heavy use of unit testing in
the project with more developers finding benefit from it. And I think I
have compelling examples.
## Matchers
To start off, it is important to understand that there are two components
to what gmock offers. The first has very little to do with "mocks". It is
actually a matcher language and system for writing test predicates:
EXPECT_EQ(expected, actual);
EXPECT_NE(somet...
