A stats question -- about survival analysis and censoring
Dear UseRs, Suppose I have data regarding smoking habits of a prospective cohort and wish to determine the risk ratio of colorectal cancer in the smokers compared to the non-smokers. What do I do at the end of the study with people who die of heart disease? Can I just censor them exactly the same as people who become uncontactable or who die in a plane crash? If not, why not? I'm thinking that heart disease isn't i...

Stats question - cox proportional hazards adjustments
Hi useRs, Many studies of the link between red meat and colorectal cancer use Cox proportional hazards with (among other things) a gender covariate. If it is true that men eat more red meat, drink more alcohol and smoke more than women, and if it is also true that alcohol and tobacco are known risk factors then why does it make sense to "adjust" for g...

survival analysis and censoring
...ome unknown exposure X, Perth sunlight say, makes people much more likely to get both of the outcomes. Assume further that it matters, i.e., the study includes a reasonable number of people with and without this exposure. Then someone who has an early heart attack actually has a higher risk of colorectal cancer than a colleague of the same age/sex/followup who did not have a heart attack, the reason being that the HA guy is more likely to be from Perth. Your simulation went wrong by not actually accounting for time. You created an outcome table for CC & HD and added a random time v...

Job opportunity in AMSTERDAM: ANALYSIS OF NGS CANCER DATA
...s. First, we have acquired large panels of human tumors, on which we are currently performing kinase exon sequencing. More specifically, we are performing sequencing on 1) 400 samples from the NEO-ALTTO study to find alterations associated with resistance to HER2 targeted therapies; 2) at least 200 colorectal samples and 300 breast cancers (triple negatives and invasive lobular carcinomas) to detect alterations frequently occurring in these patient populations. A very strong feature of all these datasets is that matched controls are available to ensure high accuracy in variant calling. The goal is to...

Response To Form Submission Hanging
Hello, I am using Mechanize to post a form to a website. When I do this by hand in my browser the response takes about 35s to come back (it''s a long page full of tables and graphics). When I do this with Mechanize, the server starts to respond and then appears to hang. The obvious conclusion is that my code is wrong but I am reasonably sure that I haven''t altered it
