cbind() and factors.

I'm seeing some "odd" behaviour with cbind(). My code is:
> cat <- read.table("cogs_category.txt", sep="\t", header=TRUE,
quote=NULL, colClasses="character")
> colnames(cat)

> is.factor(cat$Code)
[1] FALSE
