unknown connection
Hello,
Today I updated one of our computers running CentOS 5.3 32bit. After a
reboot I notice the following with lsof -i
sshd 3638 root 3u IPv6 17317 TCP
pc46.astro.up.pt:ssh->119.1.193.205:zephyr-clt (ESTABLISHED)
sshd 3639 sshd 3u IPv6 17317 TCP
pc46.astro.up.pt:ssh->119.1.193.205:zephyr-clt (ESTABLISHED)
What is this connection?
IPtables is on and SELinux is on enforcing mode.
Thanks,

Random Nos
R-lings,
I know the algo for Laplace generation, but arent there any packages available.
Also, i'm trying to check for the Bernoulli sums obey the CLT, but though i calculate 2000 values of
S(n)-n*p
----------
sqrt(n*p*(1-p))
for p=.5 and n=45, this fails both KS test and shapiro test.
Why??
Thanks

Using R to illustrate the Central Limit Theorem
Dear All
I am totally new to R and I would like to know whether R is able and
appropriate to illustrate to my students the Central Limit Theorem,
using for instance 100 independent variables with uniform distribution
and showing that their sum is a variable with an approximated normal
distribution.
Thanks in advance,
Paul

greek in main title
Hello,
I have written a function that demonstrates the CLT by
generating samples following the exponential distribution,
calculating the means, plotting the histogram, and drawing
the limiting normal curve as an overlay. I have the title
of each histogram state the sample size and rate (1/theta)
for the exponential (the output is actually 4 histograms),

maxima
Dear all,
suppose I have a bi-variate function f(x,y), I want to find the maxima. I
define x and y vector, and get matrix z=f(x,y). how can I get which (x0,y0)
makes z become the maxima?
I can do two loops to get the x0 and y0, but I think there may exist a
function to do this.

A somewhat off the line question to a log normal distribution
Sigfried,
I am not a statistician, but I have learned that according to the Central Limit Theorem (CLT) sums of random variables, regardless of their form, will tend to be normally distributed. CLT does not require the variables in the sum to come from the same underlying distribution.

I was able to install from source and check rJava 0.9-12 in 4.0.0 alpha.
For the CRAN binary of 3.6.3 I had to make sure I was using clang 7:
'clang' defaults to that in the Apple CLT which does not support
-fopenmp -- but the binary package just worked.

ANOVA-like tests of geometrically-distributed data
...:)
I am collecting simulation data, and the results are geometrically
distributed (or approximately so). From what I can gather from my stats
books, provided the sample size is large enough (>30 or so) I can use t
and z-tests to compare means under different experimental conditions as
the CLT says that the sample means will be approximately normally
distributed.
However, also as I understand it, the ANOVA explicitly assumes that the
population is normally distributed, which is an assumption that in my case
is not satisfied.
I have also been told that something called a "gene...

[LLVMdev] [LNT] Question about results reliability in LNT infrustructure
...idea in
> general?
No, in general. But one should be aware about the assumptions of the
underlying theory. t-test is fine as soon as our data follows the
normal distribution (and hence the test would be exact) or the sample
size is large (then we have the asymptotic normality of the mean due
to CLT).

The precision would be much better for small sample sizes (say, in range 10-50).
But in any case, never trust someone who will claim he can reliably
estimate the variance from 3 data points.

plot - central limit theorem
Hi,
Is there a way to simulate a population with R and pull out m samples,
each with n values
for calculating m means?
I need that kind of data to plot a graphic, demonstrating the central
limit theorem
and I don't know how to begin.
So, perhaps someone can give me some tips and hints how to start and
which functions to use.
thanks for any help,
joerg
