Bootstrapping issues

and yet the original code ran without any errors. I have two general
observations to make about this:
(1) this does not make sense; and
(2) I don't understand this.
How best to make these two observations go away and run the code to my
satisfaction?

Setting -sys.setenv()- permanently in Linux using RStudio

so clearly this is incorrect.
There must be a solution to this that I can't see and I've tried everything
within my knowledge, so can anybody help me on this?

Patchy 'front-end' package installation problems using -R- 2.15.1
