freeBSD User provider
...aqadmin)> pw user del help ... -r remove home & contents so to create this is -m and to destroy this is -r - password. This one is tricky as the pw command does not allow specificaly to give the password on the command line encrypted. It requires the chpass utility: chpass [-a list] [-p encpass] [-e expiretime] [-s newshell] [user] it is installed on all my freeBSD servers but i don''t know if this is the same package and if this is by default :) So here is what i think for the provider: puppet-0.22.4/lib/puppet/provider/user/pw.rb...

changing samba user password
Looking for a good, and secure, way to have users in a Samba AD environment be able to change their passwords without using a Windows domain member client or having local user or shell access to the AD system. Web based would probably be ideal, but I don't want some huge set of modules that do everything under the sun, just this one task. Possible? With what? Thanks! Chris

remote password change, if password is expired
Hi, we have a couple of users which "forget" to change the passwords even if they get an reminder. Normally we tell them to use a windows machine, where you can change your password if it's expired. But how can a remote user change his password if it's expired ? Is there any secure solution for this  ? -- Bye, Peer

Not getting much on the wire. log.smbd and log.<machine> not showing anything much. Machine accounts created manually using chpass and smbpasswd -a -m <machine_name>. Mapping drives function fine. WinXP pro joins without a problem. As there are no smbd logs, I'm thinking the same getdc dgram issue is still occuring(?). Anyone else trying/seeing this. Question about -b mode of sftp(1) and auto-chdir behaviour
Hello, i'm curious to know wether the automatic chdir behaviour of sftp(1) in batch mode is a side-effect of the current implementation, or if it's instead a regular feature. And, if it's indeed the latter, wether there is any compatibility problem if one would actually rely on it? I'll attach a copy+paste diff to document this nice feature in sftp.1, just for the hoped-for case.

Strange LDAP add machine problem
I'm setting up a Samba/LDAP PDC (samba-3.0.13 / openldap-2.1.30) and I'm trying to join a machine (called "melisa") to the domain. When I try to join the domain, I type in the Administrator (which maps to root) credentials. and after a few seconds I get a windows error that says: The following error occurred while attempting to joing the domain "PCA-USERS":

changing unix password with samba
I am running RedHat 9 and samba. I need to be able to set one password for each user and sync them with ssh, web, unix password. i.e. When I change samba pass, it changes unix, ftp, etc. Is this possible with samba? I saw that it is if you are running windows and then you can change the unix pass via samba. Is this possible when running linux. I just want to easily administer my users.

Environment Poisoning and login -p
...-p.) Part of the issue here is an underlying disagreement about the meaning of "standard shell." Skimming the -CURRENT source tree reveals several different definitions of "standard shell": * A group of "equivalent" shells from which users can choose. (from chpass(1)) * An indicator that the user is allowed ftp access (from ftpd(8)) * An indicator that su is permitted * An indicator that mail include files should be honored (in sendmail; based on a very quick skimming of the source) These are not entirely consistent interpretations,...
